If the temp gauge increases to max when it just turns over then push on the relays under the driver (RHD) seat to make sure they are seated

Great thanks, that sounds like it may well be the problem.

Hi Dorsetsmith, where do you get a hold of the service bulletins?

Following this as suffering from the same issue. Sick of embarrassing moments at petrol stations.

It's been at the garage for nearly three weeks now and eventually not started for them.... . They think it may be the relay as a fault code on the ECU is saying it is not energizing correctly. If not its a ECU fault

Got to be worth a try bridging pin 3 and 4 on the instrument pack plug to remove the possibility of an instrument cluster broken solder joint interrupting the immobiliser signal:
https://www.defender2.net/forum/post814212.html#814212 The thinking behind this is: On some 2.4 Pumas the 10AS unit controls the starter relay, enabling it when the immobiliser is inactive. It's not exactly clear what I mean by "some", but I believe it's most of them, with only early 2.4s have the ECU controlling the starter relay. So, assuming this applies to you (I believe on a 2010 this is the case) this is why your engine will crank. The 10AS is allowing the starter relay to operate, so the engine cranks. However, the ECU does not receive the de-immobilise signal from the 10AS, then it won't fire the injectors. Therefore you get cranking, and the correct operation of the immobiliser/alarm LED but no firing. Last year I sorted a 2010 Puma with exactly this issue, it would crank, and the RPM needle moved, but an signal tester showed the ECU wasn’t firing the injectors at all. Bridging 3 and 4 allowed it to start straight away. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Thanks Martin. They have checked the instrument cluster and said it's not the issue. Fingers crossed it is the relay but will keep you posted so hopefully help out other folks on here.

Hi guys,
I’ve had this same fault on my neighbours 59 2.4 and my 07 2.4 both headache to find as I had checked everything and bypassed the instrument pack and still no joy so rang BAS and shot up there with my ecu he was mega helpful he repaired it there and then Then my neighbours one started playing up intermittently and exactly the same as mine |
