MOT failure - rear crank seal
Just had word that my 2006 110 Hardtop has failed it’s MOT because of an oil leak from the rear crank seal. It’s only covered 49,000 miles but whilst the gearbox is off is there anything else worth seeing to? I’m keen to take any preventive measures whilst there is access.

Cheers

Fred

The clutch and dual mass flywheel are certainly things to do whilst the gearbox is off, can’t really think of anything else you’d need to do

I had considered that but with such low mileage on a motor that hasn’t been modified or abused I’m a tad reluctant. But it could well be worthwhile upgrading to something such as an LOF clutch

You're sure that it is the rear crank seal, not the fuel pressure regulator leaking diesel into the clutch housing?

Maybe a pre mot check and a wipe down would have been useful

I’m yet to see any photos of the leak because I’m offshore with work. I am slightly dubious that they’ve diagnosed a rear crank seal straight away when you can’t actually see it. I understand that it can only be a few things in that area but the crank seal is one of the big ones to start with.

Yes a pre MOT check might have been useful, although I don’t fancy pulling the gearbox out without a ramp.

All my past defenders have had weeps from engine gearbox faces maybe you have an over zealous MOT tester 🤔

Im just surprised that of all the seals to go it’s one of the ones that’s not exposed to the elements. It’s never seen the light of day. I’ll get them to send me some photos for reference. If it is the crank seal I’m okay with that. But it would be nice to know for sure before committing to 6 hours labour.

It’s also worth looking at the rocker cover seal, there’s a half moon shape at the rear of the engine which is prone to leaking, this then drips down the rear of the engine and round the bell housing

jimbo55 - I did take a good look around the top of the engine when I first got it (2 weeks ago) and I couldn't see any leaks.

hank - As was I. The MOT tester has recorded it as "Oil leaking excessively from engine rear crank oil seal (8.4.1 (a) (i))" and it's down as a "repair immediately".

Does anyone know what the regs are with regards to failing an MOT test but the original MOT still being valid? I assume that once it's been through an MOT test and failed then that's it. And if I were to collect it then I'd need to trailer it.

Once it has failed an MOT test it no longer has a valid certificate, regardless of when the previous MOT test certificate was due to expire, so in theory you can no longer go on using the vehicle.

It remains legal to drive a vehicle to and from a prearranged local MOT test without a current MOT provided that it is insured and provided that is has not just failed the MOT with a defect considered to be "dangerous". If it has such a defect the test centre which failed it should not allow it to be removed except on a trailer or recovery vehicle (noting that even towing it with its wheels on the road would not be legal, so it must be carried away).

I doubt that even a substantial oil leak would fall into the "dangerous" category but in these strange times when motorists are considered evil and any form of pollution is likely to cause mass casualties before nightfall it is not impossible.

blackwolf - I thought that might be the case. The oil leak is listed under major defects. The other thing it failed on was front brake pipes and they quite rightly are down under dangerous defects.

Also, since it's last MOT it has only covered 251 miles. And the MOT tests and services have been carried out by the same garage for the last 5 or more years. I find it odd that a major leak can develop in such a short space of time and the early signs not be spotted. Or is that just me?

The brake pipes would rule out driving it away, I fear, though the oil leak whilst major isn't dangerous.

It must be a significant oil leak to be a major defect though.

I suppose that it is possible for a seal to fail suddenly and completely so perhaps not too surprising, the brake pipes are in some way more of a surprise to go from no warning to dangerous is that period. It is possible that the lack of use the vehicle has had has accelerated the seal failure.

That was my thinking. If replacing the brake pipes would get it an MOT with advisories then I could investigate. But if it would still fail with the oil leak then I'm left with little choice other than to have the work done or trailer it away.

Does 6 hours sound reasonable for pulling the gearbox off to replace the seal?
