TD5 Air Flow Sensor failing again....
I've recently been noticing my TD5 air flow sensor starting to show symptoms of deterioration again (mostly poor throttle response), but its been less than 3k miles / 8 months since the genuine JLR replacement. Car had a JE Tune put on at the same time.

Prior to that another genuine JLR one was fitted and that deteriorated in a similar fashion and similar period of time / mileage... Car was however stock.

Still has the EGR and runs mostly good quality diesel or premium....

This doesn't appear normal. Curious if there could be an underlying issue causing this (as its happened pre tune and post tune)?

Doesn't seem to warrant buying another JLR air flow sensor now, perhaps I should get a Siemens replacement? Or is there 'special' contact cleaner I can use?

Out of interest what type of air filter are you using?

It’s strange to have one failing so soon but only being 8months old it will be warranty.

Should be an ITG panel filter and prior to that a stock panel filter.

Yes assume its under warranty, unfortunately that process I think will be long-winded....

Has the filter been re oiled? I know with the K&N type if there is too much oil on them it kills the MAF.

That sounds like a smoking gun to me. Much better to stick with the OE filter, plus tests have shown them to work better, too. Darren

Siemens VDO units are what JLR uses.

Oiled filters can cause MAFs to die eventually.

Up to you, but I’d either replace the MAF and stick in a paper air filter, or just unplug the MAF and leave it. Charlie

Thanks all

ITG panel filters I'm unaware if that needs oiling (not sure it would if its foam), JE never mentioned anything when they installed it (it's fitted as part of their tune).

I had some time spare earlier so took a look at the sensor and filter... both appeared clean and fine.

Anyhow given that I was planning to order a replacement sensor i.e. having little to lose, decided to spray the sensor with a quick drying / non residue contact cleaner and reset the battery at the same time.

Car seems to be back to normal..... how long it'll last who knows, but if so will just order another sensor.

Curious if the EGR valve can have an impact?

The EGR is downstream of the MAF, so no. Darren

ITG are oiled - |I suspect that might be the cause?. Rgds.

As others state , looks like oil contamination of the sensor, and cleaning will resolve. I use this dedicated maf cleaner once a year .https://products.liqui-moly.com/air-flow-sensor-cleaner-2.html, you may need to do every six months if you keep the non standard air filter.

Thanks for responses.

Does sound like it could be the culprit, will update this thread after 1000 mi with whether its still ok and not just a quick fix.... If so, will buy a can and just include it as part of the maintenance schedule.

I wonder now if the other genuine JLR air flow sensor (again less than 3k / 9m) was just in need of a quick clean, despite using a stock air filter (although JE did comment this was slightly dirty at the time).

ITG filters should be oiled, I have a can of ITG oil spray from the old one on my RRC. My 90 also used to go through MAF sensors regularly when I was running a performance air filter (green cotton I believe). Been on the same MAF sensor for years since returning to genuine filters and noticed absolutely no performance difference Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Having tried most 'performance' filter types over the last 30 odd years I think the placebo effect is strong.

In reality, they sometimes cause more issues than they fix. Rgds.

Naturally given JE's link to ITG, they were only ever going to recommend and fit one type of filter with their tune and tune+.

This TD5 is otherwise stock and I suspect quite restrictive. Shame it just becomes very noticeable when the throttle response declines and that's my biggest issue with the failing sensor. Given the Defender is not a vehicle for me to chase numbers with, so long as the car can run well continuously, it's not that important to me which air filter is in there.

The other JE truck is less restrictive and runs well.

When I can get hold of the Nanocom to buy, I will run the two back to back and see if the air flow sensor values at idle and greater revs are substantially different. That's very much a bit of geeky information for me on a quiet Sunday....

If you're interested in the geeky side of it (and who isn't?) then search out the posts by Pete Bell of BAS on comparative rolling road tests that he performed with different types of filters and also different snorkels. It's eye opening. Darren
