I’m not an expert, but generally speaking black smoke is too much fuel, or too little air. Check MAF and MAP sensors are clean. Simple place to start.

Hey
Mine has the same issue at 200RPM, engine feels flat, lack of no power and produces black smoke. I know all my injectors are good, I had them calibrated. I now think its my turbo, the wastegate valve is sticking, My turbo is currently in German for a rebuild, I will update on the situation once I get it back and reinstall it. Kev |

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'll have a go at cleaning the MAF, MAP and ERG to see if there is any improvement there - the bit I'm finding odd here is the interim break in smoke directly after the service (could it be the injectors getting clogged up again?)
Interesting point about the turbo. Mine has (I think) been changed at some point as it's a Garrett M24 EC-4 (which I don't think is standard? but could be wrong) - do let me know how you get on once re-installed |

Change the VCV as well, If it’s only a few years old. It’s not costly and maybe a possibility.
It’s is likely to be directly attributed to fuelling characteristics. Only a little water in the fuel or quite a bit of aging will kill it off and cause issues. Go for the cheapest options first, often or not this is the case and helps avoid wasting or spending excess money. PF Jones is the place to go, I had good success with that. I have this, mostly in 5th or 6th at about 2500rpm. I have cleaned map and maf, done the injectors and serviced it. No difference. I have an intercooler and silicone pipes to fit next. The truck has good power most of the the time but I can feel a dip in power when it happens. A little bit more throttle and it pulls out of it and the smoke ckears.

I just installed my recon turbo, the black smoke has gone.
I was sitting at 2000 rpm without any issues. |

Cured mine also, split intercooler pipe.... and I had checked them, but not well enough!

There is no Wastegate at Tdci (Puma) engines turbos. They use a variable turbine geometry instead. |

Thanks for all the updates
I took of my intercooler pipes to properly check them out - they were all good with no splits. My MAF and MAP were in a right state (heaps of carbon build up on MAP) - cleaned them up with some electrical cleaner and that seems to have sorted it having just been on a 20 mile spin - no smoke or soot in the exhaust. If it comes back, I'll start looking at my turbo as there was quite a lot of oily residue by the breather inlet in the air filter pipe (not sure if this is normal or if it's coming up from the turbo) No idea if it's a placebo effect, but it also seems to be running alot smoother / more responsive than before |

Sounds good. The oil in the breather pipe comes normally as blow by, when the injector seals are worn. Maybe it is just an old artifact.

![]() Click image to enlarge Massive split, I am surprised the truck ran as well as it did! The inner is not spilt so it is holding some pressure I suppose. |

Glad you guys have all sorted it
Sadly my update was a little premature and I'm still getting black smoke in low revs once I hit the motorway (no issues on shorter or lower speed trips) Going to send the turbo in to get it checked out & see if that sorts it - fingers crossed ill be off green peaces radar soon! |

My update was also premature. I had the Turbo reconditioned and things are much better.
Still in 5th gear on the motorway it black smokes if I accelerate gently. If I put my foot down it’s ok. I’m going to order new MAF and MAP sensors next month and see how it goes Kev |

These symptoms are very similar to mine, did ye check both hoses and intercooler?
