What is this for?
While rummaging about under the RH front seat of my Defender trying to find some reason for my intermittent starting problem, I have found that the wiring doesn't seem to match the workshop manual or electrical wiring/connector manuals appropriate to the VIN! In particular, I have a fuse block that doesn't feature, as far as I can see, in any tech manuals yet appears to original.

Can anyone tell me what it is for? In the first photo below it is outlined by a feeble white-ish circle added to the image. It has four wires entering it, and one huge and one less huge fuse. What do they protect? The fuse block is bolted down to the same fastening as the fog light ECU and it is difficult in situ to see the fuse ratings. It has the appearance of something fitted in the factory since it connects into bound harnesses, and there is no extra electrical equipment (except for things I have fitted myself) on the car - at least, not that I know of!

I cannot match this up to anything in the wiring diagrams or the electrical connector manual, so any advice would be welcome!

Also, underneath the spaghetti is a whitish four-pole connector (visible centre left in the first photo); any idea what this is? I thought it might be the rear door harness but am now not so sure. There is also a single fuse (30A if I remember correctly) in a loose fuse holder under the coils of wire which is the ECM fuse. The black box thingy with the label is the "rear fog guard lamp ECU" (in the old days a switch was enough for one of them)!

My vehicle is an 07-plate 110 DC, County spec, and does not have ABS/TC, aircon, heated seats, nor heated screen, hence only three relays.

Blackwolf,

Very difficult to determine. Are their any output cables from the fuseblock? Pull the fuse and see if everything is functional? These are the questions that spring to mind....Spotlights.....Winch.....any other auxilliary lighting.....OEM head unit.....are you the first owner....30amp fuse is typical rating for subwoofer....do you have contact with previous owner?

Sorry can't enlighten you! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I've had a closer look and one is 60A and the other 30A. Both look like factory fit since the wires on the load side run inside the main harness heading out from the seat box, they're not simply taped to it. The feed to the 60A comes from the main BJB input.

The only aftermarket electrical fitting at the moment is the winch, which I fitted, and a 12S socket - it's nothing to do with either. The head is standard and there is no evidence of any extra wiring.

I am not the first owner, and when I bought it it did have an A-bar with two 55W driving lights fitted, but they weren't connected and there is no evidence that they ever had been - no switch, relay, nor wiring.

Very strange! I am reluctant to pull them out to see what stops working, since enough things stop working by themselves without any provocation! It is a Defender after all! I'll check the wire colours since if they are original that should narrow down the circuit.

Don't know what they are, but they are original fit. We have them on our 2010 USW (basic spec + Elec Win + Cent Lock + Alarm battery back up).

I took the lid off before taking the photo. No remap - yet.

Mystery thing is definitely a pair of fuses, one 60A and one 30A.

Daniele, there is another 30A fuse in an in-line fuseholder under the loop of wire in the photo which I thought was the ECM. Are you saying all 3 are ECM? One 60A plus two 30A (at least) for the ECM seems a bit much - 1.5kW ?
