Puma transmission/prop/UJ/Drivetrain issue
Hi all,

Having an issue with my Puma. Did a long 500 mile+ trip last weekend and on the return leg hearing all sorts of noises. Took it to the local 4x4 specialists and they can't figure it out. Car was serviced prior to the trip and no issues reported. Mainly a screeching noise when accelerating and low banging/grumbling noise coming from somewhere within the drivetrain. Screeching is worst when accelerating, and banging/grumbling most noticeable when decelerating under gear. All noises stop when pressing on the clutch.

Garage did a full inspection and found no issues on the props and UJs, which were my first suspects. Also couldn't pinpoint the issue with a digital audio inspection and have referred me to a transmission/gearbox specialist. Having a look under myself, checking the props with handbrake on/off - front prop, rear UJ (see pic) has a lot more play in it compared to the other three. Also noticed a small amount of oil on the transfer box assembly/extension.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

There should be no play at all in the UJs - if there is then they need replacing ASAP. Failure while driving is liable to cause lots of damage.

If the garage you took it to for the service and the diagnostics is the same one. Don’t bother and never return to them. Those UJ’s haven’t been greased for many a mile from what I can see. So they didn’t service it properly, or diagnose it

Even if you just pump some grease in a take it for a quick drive you tend to hear a change in noise and feel.

Yep, UJ’s need replacing immediately, wouldn’t recommend you drive it at all either until done.
As mentioned they are dry and haven’t been lubed, and looks to me that there is at least one set of roller bearings in the cup gone there that I can see and the seal gone too.

I had very similar, never picked up on MoT either, at least you found it I had a lot of trouble finding it with mine.

GKN UJ’s are best, unless you want to spend more and go genuine which are likely to be the same too. Thumbs Up ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️
