It sounds to me as though something at the front of the engine has seized, it could be any of the things driven by the serpentine belt, or one of the idler pulleys. The clunk may well be the starter failing to turn what is, in effect, a seized engine.
I suggest removing the fan, taking the belt off, and seeing which if any of the pulleys no longer turns. |

Thanks for the reply. Would the starter motor have been making a noise while the motor was running, prior to the complete stop. It definitely was running and something went and engine stopped.

Get a spanner on the front of the engine and see if you can turn engine by hand. Does sound very odd.
