Not starting - is the alternator gone?
Hi, advice would be great.
Yesterday evening a high pitched sound started coming from what seemed the front/fan area under the bonnet , as I shut it off. This morning started it up and again same sound.
As I went to close bonnet and shut off, the pitch got higher and then the engine cut out. Had a quick ( very amateurish) look at the fan and belt and both look ok.
Fuel pump is priming when the key is turned but when switching to on, there is a dull thud from the engine ( not turning over) and nothing after. Could this be the alternator gone?
(Battery is new enough and belt is 2 years old)
Any pointers appreciated

It sounds to me as though something at the front of the engine has seized, it could be any of the things driven by the serpentine belt, or one of the idler pulleys. The clunk may well be the starter failing to turn what is, in effect, a seized engine.

I suggest removing the fan, taking the belt off, and seeing which if any of the pulleys no longer turns.

Thanks for the reply. Would the starter motor have been making a noise while the motor was running, prior to the complete stop. It definitely was running and something went and engine stopped.
Thanks

Get a spanner on the front of the engine and see if you can turn engine by hand. Does sound very odd.
