Norway by EV - now not by EV!

I appreciate that this isn’t a “Land Rover” trip (it was originally planned to be) as my Defender will send almost a month in a long term car park. After much number crunching and the thought of adding an extra week each end of the trip just to get there and back, instead of driving to Bergen Via Dover/France Belgium The Netherlands Germany Denmark Sweden and into Norway we decided to wreck our “green” credentials and fly to Bergen direct and hire a car (which at least would have the steering wheel on the left!) for my retirement celebration holiday 2 years late. …………. **
Now hiring a car in Norway isn’t cheap and with diesel at £2 a litre already there I decided to take the bull by the horns and hire a VW ID3 to make the 2750 mile round trip having heard all sorts of wonderful things about the excellent EV infrastructure in Norway and thanks to Mr Musk opening his entire Norwegian charging network to non Tesla owners a couple of weeks ago it got a whole lot easier.

Now I know that there are some members here who think that the second most awful thing to hit the world in 2020 after Covid was the L663 Defender and the 3rd worst thing is the spawn of the devil - EV’s so I know this won’t be of interest to them but would there be any interest from members if, when I return in mid-July, I post a thread here in the off topic section about how I got on with making a marathon journey by EV? I do own an EV myself but the longest trip I’ve made in it is a 60 mile round trip to Glasgow airport so there is an element of anxiety on my behalf even before starting out for the airport due to some of the distances involved - I’ve tried to plan no more than 150 miles max a day driving but there are a couple of 200 milers too which when considering the low speed limits in Norway and the ID3’s reasonable electric range (but quick charging) means a couple of very long days at the wheel (longest I think is 5 hours (including 3 ferry crossings of fjords!)

Planned route is from Bergen to North Cape and back via Forde, Molde, Malvik, Namsos, Sandnessjoen, Fauske, Bodo, Narvik, Tromso, Alta, Hammerfest, Honningsvag, North Cape, Honningsvag, Karasjok (to visit the northern most glass factory in the world!) then we wind our way back south. I’m the driver and have planned a few 2 day stops for a break and we will also take the Hurtigruten coastal Express ferry from Hammerfest to Honningsvag. Aim is to be back in Bergen for 6th July. The trip has been planned using the A Better Route Planner app for EV routing and I have already downloaded several (3) apps for chargers although I’m assured most take debit and credit cards as well for charging payment but Hertz has also said “don’t worry, we supply you with a special key ring and an app that will activate any charger in Norway or Sweden!” - nearly all the hotels I’ve booked so far also have complimentary Type 1 or Type 2 charging in their parking garages or car parks but the ID3 can also charge at a maximum rate of 120kw DC I believe so adding 200 miles range takes about 40 minutes.

My travelling companion wants to visit the Boble. Art-glass Factory at Karasjok but I want to be standing on the Arctic Circle on 21st June - the Summer Solstice! The reason for going to the tourist trap that is North Cape (the Northern most place in Europe accessible by road) also happens to be the only one of the World’s Great Capes I haven’t been passed by sea…….. so by car will have to do as when I went on a Hurtigruten cruise in 2016 the weather was too bad to go north of the island it is on and we went south about…..

This is A Better Route Planner’s routing if I were to go direct from Bergen to Honningsvag not the routes I’ll be following which are more along the coast as I’m trying to avoid highways and motorways as much as possible (mainly because they tend to be toll roads in Norway!) and gives an idea of how far the trip is.

I took our ID3 pool car to London and back recently and comfortably averaged 4.5miles /kW.

That’s similar to what I get in the Mini SE I own but in the last week or so of warmer days I’m frequently seeing 5m/kwh at 60 on A Roads around here. It’s not really meant to be a continent crossing car though! Although one member of the owners group on FB recently drove his from Nottingham to Berlin and back and the only charging problem he has was in Belgium where the chargers wouldn’t accept his U.K. debit card so he had to start an Ionity account to avoid being hit with their higher “guest” cost to non members to use their chargers there.

BTW 4.5m/kwh is 151 miles per gallon equivalent

I can only dream of that in the X545e....... current average is 2.19miles / kW over the 1070miles covered so far. Hard to say, as we have PVs, but at the Eco 7 rate of 20.4p a kW, that's around 90mpg

Still that much better than the P400e as the extra usable 7kw in the BMW allows the BMW to double the EV distance (53miles) over the P400e.

I couldn’t understand why JLR didn’t at least try to match the X5 PHEV’s range with any of their bigger PHEV’s - does you X5 allow you to regen charge back into the battery on braking? I will say this for their battery management system, it’s really clever in their EV’s and even my little Mini has a Heat Pump as standard unlike the VAG group cars where they are a very expensive option.
I have PV’s as well but up here many of the public chargers are free to use so I prefer to use those than charge in offpeak although I do charge the Mini on sunbeams if I’m generating enough but that is really only a top up rather than a fill up as my Zappi charger manages the rate of charging depending on solar generation. Hi Tim, I'm one of those not interested in the L663 but I am interested in EVs (and therefore I will be interested in the ND when it goes BEV)... But I'd be particularly interested in reading about your EV trip through Scandi countries. My wife has said she would like us to tour Norway & Sweden and specifically in an EV - I think Bjorn Nyland is to blame.
We don't own an EV at the moment, and might not for some time as we both work from home so have no financial justification for buying or leasing a new or new-ish car, but we both like the idea of touring in one, particularly in countries with better infrastructure than the UK.
Past experience of fly/driving has taught us to always rent the biggest car you can afford, as space makes spending so much time in the car more pleasant. I'd be looking at say the ID.4 over the ID.3?

Ads90, all the big name rental companies operating in Norway have a choice of EV models on their books from E-Up through to Tesla X’s. Budget had the biggest choice BUT looking on TripAdvisor they also had some distinctly unflattering ratings for their Bergen depot……….. big claims for damage that people could only get refunded by sending them pictures of the condition of the vehicle on pickup and hand back - surprised me as I thought that that sort of thing only happened in the Medi resorts…….

PJM - that looks like the guess-o-meter/ GOM prediction, but cheering to see that 95% of my legs on the trip might be done without having to worry about stopping to recharge even allowing for the GOM’s over estimation of range and will allow a zap charge to fill even on a 50kW charger - remember Bjorn on YouTube’s mantra - ABC, always be charging! 72mile one way trip at 4.6mile/kw. Started with 228miles. High 150mile range left when I arrived so pretty accurate.

Do you know which battery that ID3 has? Originally there were 45, 58 and 77 kw but due to chip shortages I know VW decided last year to stop production of the smaller and larger units - taking that reading of 4.6 and multiplying it by battery size 58 gives 266 miles which would tally with the previous GOM prediction of 270ish miles range. AFAIK the hire one I am getting is a 58kw unit but I’ve based my charge stop plan on the smallest battery just in case I get an old version from Hertz.
