Where does it mention tax?
A Google converter gives that ad £47,421. Using JLR Defender accessory costs, and I'm going off the top of my head rather than look them up: Winch £6k Snorkel £750 Locking diff £1,500 each Winch may be a bit too much but maybe £7k in total without adding in the suspension lift. So base vehicle would £40k? Is that just wishful thinking? |

I believe the official winches are to be supplied by Red Winches, which are a nice product.
I’m with you Supacat... I reckon (hope) that price is for a near top of the range model with all the “adventurous” kit on it, wouldn’t like to say if it includes tax or not, but maybe a basic model might get as low £40k? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

In GBP that’s £47.5k, so about £12k more than the £35k I was given as a list price for a 2.2 110 puma XS in 2015. Taking account of cumulative inflation at 13.5 percent it would put the list price of the defender at £40k today.
So not miles out based on a price we are not certain of at this stage. |

Supacat - I always plan for the worst & hope for the best!
If their target market is professional users they will be expecting a plus vat price, & did someone on here mention to get past various safety regs it will be classed as the old Defender ie commercial based car? A few months ago I guessed at a very basic spec, (I'd include electric windows, central locking, air con, and diff locks in that but little else) diesel would be £60k OTR - I still stand by that......... Can somebody help me with my math? I'd like to determine the emissions "penalty" which the Grenadier will be exposed to if/when sold in the EU. This is relevant because other markets with lower (or higher) penalties could presumably offer the Grenadier at differing price-points.
Interview stated price: 55k (EUR) - Offroad version with lift, diff locks (3x), snorkel and winch EU Emissions penalty - Emissions: 255 g CO2/km (assumed, based upon new defender 3.0 110) - Threshold: 95 g CO2/km - Penalty: 95 (EUR) per g CO2/km above threshold (per car) - Result: 15,200 (EUR) penalty Sales price w/o embedded EU emissions penalty - 39,800 (EUR) Implied US price - Sales price w/o emissions penalty: $48,500 (USD) - US Emissions penalty (CAFE): $2,100 (USD)... based upon 15 mpg deficiency, $140 / mpg penalty - US sales price: 50,600 General comments: - This implied US price is right in-line with Wrangler Rubicons and Bronco Sasquatches |

If it comes in at below the £50k mark then i will give it some serious thought.

I embarrassingly missed the "chicken tax" in my tally. With the 25% tarrif on imports of trucks and SUVs, the consumer price in the US would instead correspond to something in the $63,000 USD range.

With your calculation ResGuy that works out around the £45,000 GBP mark.

ResGuy68, does the chicken tax apply to SUVs? I googled it but couldn't find a definitive answer. I would have thought it wouldn't apply as long as the SUV has 4 passenger doors. It looks like lots of 4 door SUVs are made abroad and sold in the US. Just given their prices, I can't imagine they incur the 25% tax. Then again, I have no knowledge base from which to work.

It's also worth rembering that your quote was for a 2.2 4cyl Ford engine with just 122bhp as opposed to a 3.0l 6cyl BMW engine with 250bhp. That's a noticeably different engine size which, on most configurators, would add a few thousand over your quote. So one would argue an even more interesting and appealing price when factoring in inflation, spec, build quality etc. Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Do we think that is plus tax? Most people talking in loose terms about vehicle costs surely talk of the inclusive price, only commercial specific discussions talk about "+ VAT"? And Ineos have talked about the example vehicle being the 'Off road' model, rather than any road biased commercial variant. Obviously it could relate to loggers or farmers, but I wonder if LR Disco enthusiast's FB page is asking the question they'd be replying in kind? Who knows, eh? I think it's plus VAT.
Also does import tax from the EU apply here? |

If someone realistically thinks that a heavy duty, 250bhp diesel 4x4 built in low volumes for a very small market sector will be OTR around £40k then I admire their optimistic 'glass is half full' attitude!
Can anyone else remember, but I'm sure JLR claimed they lost money on every Defender ever sold and it was only FL1 then subsequent FL2 etc monocoques that saved the brand? If so using a loss making figure as the bottom line to calculate a competitors (although not strictly a competitor since the demise of the Defender) cost may not be best approach. £60k OTR - Convince me I'm wrong! |
