My guess is the electrical connector has come off the rear, and yes the centre panel has to come out but you shouldnโt need to disconnect other electrical plugs at all.
Just take out the torx screws and release it. If you have one, a multimeter it would be ideal just to check for power and continuity of the ground as well. It isnโt common for the lighters to fail, but if the lighter socket is at fault then reopening is the only option. As I said, you really need to check that power and ground is present. Hope that helps, you would be best removing the radio / HU before taking it out also to avoid any damage too. OK, nice to know it's not a common fault.
Will have a look for loose wires and if that doesn't work, I'll try to find my multimeter in the lockup! Cheers |

All done.
I ended up removing the radio (and mounting cage) in order to get the centre dash panel off. All connectors to the cigar lighter had been unplugged. They were nice and secure when I refitted them, so it seems unlikley that they'd fallen off. I can only assume that someone disconnected them, or forgot to reconnect them at somepoiint. Anyway, it all works fine now, so I'm happy. Thanks all. Jon |

Good result, yes, that does sound the most plausible reasoning for their disconnection. No Guts, No Glory.

I had exactly the same issue on my newly arrived 90. Haven driven it a couple of weeks, I wonder if it's the vibrations that makes them eventually fall off?

Could be, especially if not replaced firmly. Iโve got a blue sea 12v socket on mine which I mush prefer. No Guts, No Glory.

Vibrations eventually make everything fall off on a defender its all part of the fun of ownership

It could be, but the connections were very secure when I refitted them, and certainly were as secure as some of the other connections back there. My gut feeling is that someone disconnected it, or forgot to reconnect it while doing something else. But I'm still baffled as to what that might have been. There's no evidence of the dash ever having been apart, so no idea why anyone would be 'in there'. |

it is entirely possible that they were overlooked during factory assembly and nobody ever noticed until you did.

Very true.
It's not the most noticeable of faults! |
