Who is going to buy it?
Serious question, I'm genuinely perplexed (not my first time). I don't mean individuals who may frequent this forum, I mean which companies, police, lifeguards, etc. are going to buy the Grenadier? As time goes on and the price of the Grenadier rises, I am struggling to think who is going to buy it. It's 1977 design is not going to please the urban young father with a George Michael beard, nor will it be in the price bracket (apparently) of the police - who are under continuing budget restraints. And as I point out on another thread, Dacia's Bigster large SUV is going to start at just £20,000.

Admittedly, not exactly in the same sector, but close enough. And that's my point. I did think that energy companies might buy the Grenadier for fixing pylons in the middle of a field...but will they? Now left.

I suspect folk like me (farming / load lugging etc) will opt for whichever pickup is the cheapest for what we need to run through the business.

Then again given the fact you can buy an X5 for £699 a month I doubt most people will look at the outright cost of anything these days.

My chums couldn't believe I paid for my Landy outright in cash so to speak.

I guess (and it is only a guess) they'll be looking to those who are currently buying the 70 series Land Cruiser across the globe. That too is not a cheap vehicle and is even more old fashioned, but Toyota seem to have a steady market for those. So mining, government, NGOs, and a few enthusiasts who just want something willfully different to mainstream SUVs.

The struggle Ineos will have has nothing to do with the vehicle, it's how can they compete with Toyota's reputation and spares and dealer network. As a fleet buyer you just want something that will cause you the least hassle at a competitive price.

It's worth noting that Ineos are not predicting big sales volumes to make it viable, so they might be able to make it sustainable without needing to steal to much of Toyota's business. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I'm not sure the police would struggle to buy them, they seem to have a good garage full of X3s and X5s, some liveried, some blacked out for 'special ops'. Further, they probably wouldn't need that many, a small handful for policing properly rural areas such as Scotland, Wales and the various 'Districts'. What's more Ratcliffe is a savvy businessma, (it's not for nothing that his F1 sponsorship, cycling team and America's Cup team are all now called Ineos Grenadiers; the name is everywhere.

So I'm sure any interested police force, lifeguard, mountain rescue etc would get the vehicle at far less than list price and with no VAT, just as would be offered by BMW or Mitsubishi. And to a great degree, some who buy it will have their hand forced as there is no alternative. If like Lord Haggis you're a farmer, there are an abundance of alternatives, but if you want to carry 6-7 mountain rescuers and a whole cart full of kit on rugged roads in the Pennines, how many other vehicles truly fit the bill now that the Defender (as we know it) is gone and the new one doesn't offer nearly the same utility or for an even remotely sensible price? One? None? Same for other users such as the military, (specialist equipment costs are now stratospheric, so basic 'troop movement' or load carrying vehicles are relatively cheap an de once again, there's no real alternative) and NGOs many of whom use not-too-cheap Land Cruisers etc.

I think the fact that it will be almost unique its offerings as a new vehicle, certainly no other 4x4 I can think of offers as much, and in today's world it's not prohibitively expensive (£40k is easily lost on a VW or Skoda) there will be takers. And that doesn't even include the sort of people found on this forum who just want one, or over-landers, or even the odd George Michael beard sporting Bear Grylls wannabes from Hoxton. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I’ll be getting one. Go nice with the classic Defenders and be a step up from those in terms of ability, refinement and comfort. Quite excited as it’s also different. I used to love owning my 110’s, bought new since 2011. Everyone used to think we were mad or stupid or both to use one as a daily rather than own an X3 or X5 blah. But it wasn’t the same as those and I liked having something that was classless, quirky and able but not flashy.

New Defender is able, but now seen as aspirational to some or crass to others. So while I think it’s a brilliant piece of engineering, when it works, just not what I’d want to be looked at in.

Will the Grenadier have commercial status in its release guise? I doubt it.

This could effect its utilitarian uses. Most utility companies have moved on to Japanese pickups or German 4x4 vans.

And current pre 2016 Defender owners will probably just keep there vehicle as it is probably a better product.

I hope it meets its £50k target, I think it will be higher.

The next couple of years will see a plethora of new electric 4x4/pickup/van/SUV which will certainly give the Grenadier stiff competition.

So not sure who will buy one. Cheers Simon

Until we get a final 'on the road' price, I'm not sure many can say if they will buy one or not. I still question if the price will get into the £40k region at all, given what manufactures are charging for cars these days. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I’d be interested but it would have to oust my 24 year old Land Cruiser which is faultless, spares aren’t overly expensive even Toyota genuine parts aren’t that dear. The LC is in excellent condition with a mint chassis and does all I ask of it. It’s not worth more than £5K so it will be a big ask to pay out £40 odd grand to replace the LC.

I don't actually think there's any need for that, Supacat. I am sorry (for you) that you felt the need to write that. I posed the question as to who will buy it genuinely out of interest, and others answered without the recourse to sardonicism. I did not 'willfully' fail to recognise it's predicted sales numbers, I was merely promoting the point that I fail to see WHO will buy it. I don't think there's any need to keep banging on about a 1977 design, which it clearly is not or references to another vehicle which you seem blinkered with. It's looking to sell globally a quarter of what JLR wanted to sell with the new Defender, in probably the same markets, certainly the key ones.

So why is that hard to understand?

Asking the question is one thing, but phrasing it the way you have is just tiresome.

It's been repeatedly reported that it's launch edition will be a station wagon, so I'm not sure what insight you are sharing with us there?

Scotland 1995 Defender 110 300 Tdi CSW Auto Keswick Green
It looks like I am far more likely to buy one than the new Defender even in commercial 110 form. I need something I can load 200kgs plus in wood pellets and carry 3m timbers inside and at least 5 people at times. All up at least 2.5 miles of gravel forestry tracks and go around the country in reasonable comfort.

My 300 Tdi will be 27 by the time the Grenadier is out so it will be seeing what monthly cost it will be to me.

It looks fine to me and far better than all of the crew cab pick ups which all look weirdly curved to me. 1995 Defender 110 CSW
