Ulaanbaatar to Beijing planning
Hi All,

My brother and i have the gran plan of overlanding through Mongolia and China. I purchased my first defender this year and was thinking that in two years time I might have finally ironed out all the major issues and it would be fit to take on the journey. I was wondering if anyone had any experience transporting a car to mongolia, or whether it is just easier to rent a car out there.

We bought one when we got out there, a Russian jeep. Helps to blend in Wink

Petrol was more widely available than diesel.

We did have a couple of landies for
work however but ended up having to get our spares flown out from the UK.

We are only planning on travelling for around 15 days, i think its about 1500 miles in total, so im not sure buying the car would be the cheapest solution, but im happy to be dissuaded! Were you following a particular route or did you change it up when you were out there?

I lived out there, was based down in the middle of the Gobi desert most of the time.

For 15 days the cost of getting the car to Mongolia, sorting the customs out etc etc would be prohibitive.

If the mongol rally is running next year it might be worth giving that a go.
