My personal view is that the Disco 1 through Disco 4 are probably the best true multipurpose private vehicles the world has ever seen, and are not likely to be bettered now. My own favourite is the Disco2, which had many of the Disco1 problems ironed out, is a little larger, and (provided you didn't get the air suspension) had the best handling and most durable suspension set up, and of course the Td5 motor. Functional, fairly sophisticated, but simple enough to maintain entirely yourself.

It is just a crying shame that the D2 is so prone to chassis rust at the back (does anyone know why they are so rust-prone form the back axle backwards, there must be a reason - the front doesn't rust, just the back)?

I know that the D3 and D4 have many fans, but my personal preference is for the D2. WIth current prices (when a D2 is worth more as parts than as a running vehicle) you get an unbelievable amount of vehicle for your money.

I often find myself agreeing with you however overall I think the Land Cruiser from the same period as the D1 and D2 is a much better vehicle. I would agree that the Discovery is better looking has a nicer interior but from a build quality perspective I still feel the LC is much better. I have had a couple of Discovery 1’s and they have been fine but as they got older I seemed always to be plagued by electrical and corrosion problems. Mechanically they were pretty good I admit but I think the LC has a better engine, the Aisin gearbox is bombproof and never leaks and things generally don’t seem to go wrong. Land Cruisers are not perfect but pitting my 24 year old Colorado against the same year old Discovery I know which I would have and I’m a Land Rover owner of over 45 years. There is a reason why you see NGO’s the World over using Land Cruisers. Thumbs Up

I've bought two Discos in the last 6 months or so for use as trailer tow trucks at our sailing club.

The 1st is a Disco 1 300tDi Auto with 9 months MOT for £1200. Amazingly good chassis and just a bit of welding around the rear door panels. Turned out to be a Jap import which probably explains the chassis condition.

The second is a TD5 Auto Adventurer 7 seater Limited Edition. 220,000 miles with no real history for £1400. This one has 11 months MOT. Drives really tightly and everything works as it should. Even still has the factory fit drop down DVD player in the roof for the rear passengers and a CD autochanger under the driver's seat. Good rear chassis with no terminal rot so far. The rear air suspension has been replaced with coils, but not a problem as we don't insure the vehicles for road use.

Both are really too good to use as trailer hacks and it got me thinking about cashing in my expensive Jeep Wrangler and running old Disco's!!

I think the trick would be to just keep running one until something expensive lets go, or it fails the next MOT on a string of issues, then break it for spares.

To answer your question Blackwolf on why the chassis seem to rot away at the rear, I don't really know. I wonder if it is because the front end tends to dry out quicker after getting wet from the engine/transmission heat and perhaps the areas around the engine and power steering benefit from frequent built in protection from oil leaks Laughing Can't think the cross section is thinner at the rear, but who knows.

An early Discovery is a nice vehicle.

But a cheap as chips (and economical) workhorse without the rotting chassis and rusty tinwork is the Freelander1, Td4 diesel.

So overlooked......

But it is much smaller and nothing like as capable. And it was designed by the Great Satan aka McGovern. Rolling with laughter

I’ve had all discoveries bar a d3 (never liked)not sure why people are down on the D5, ignoring this latest one going to optional low range, stupid idea, we use our d5s hard just as much as the past.

Each have good/bad features that I would wish carried forward, but the d5 certainly can eat the journeys better my 300tdi I think could do hardcore off road the best and the d4 probably had the best van design (but the rrs was a better cat in similar form factor) Mike
