Fuel gauge not moving
The fuel gauge in my Defender110 2.2tdci 2014 is not moving;

I have tried the instrument panel in another vehicle where teh gauge works fine so I took a close look at the wiring coming from the instrument panel and it's a mess. Perhaps the problem lies there somewhere, there are two cables not connected at all!

I don't have much history on this car but from what I have learnt over the last few months it is made up of at least two, three if you include the new engine and gearbox we just put in.

The instrument panel is not likely to be the one that came with the vehicle from the factory in case that is relevant.

I'm not great with wiring so would appreciate some pointers on where to look, which of these cables are sending info to panel about the fuel sender? Perhaps I should start there!

You'll have to take out more than 1/4 before the gage in a 110 tdci moves

The gauge reads zero with warning light and alarm on ignition no matter how much fuel is in it. There is no signal to the instrument I.assume.

Connectors in the engine bay look ok, nothing untoward I can see anyway. There are two cables not connected to anything, just swinging in the wind! They are white/brown and black/grey, what are they supposed to be connected too, any idea?

Thanks! Do you have a link where I can download them, these are a bit hard to read, eyesight not so great these days!

Found it, unfortunately it doesn't help me as I have no idea what it all means or where to begin diagnosing the fault!

You my have open circuit wiring between interment cluster and fuel tank unit or ( open circuit fuel sender Big Cry )


Multimeter is good friend for continuity circuit testing and also

OK, I have a meter and I can handle some basic continuity testing, what do I test though?!

work your way down from instrument cluster plug continuity testing two wires

chasse loom is harder as one end has plug in engine bay but other end for fuel sender is at top of the tank ( but in past I have removed loom conduit from chasse loom at rear end wheel arch and find the two wires and continuity testing between this point and the engine bay plug

if find that all is ok with wiring from instrument cluster plug to rear end wheel arch you all need drain fuel tank and lower tank down so you get to the plug at the top

green wire with orange tracer and yellow wire with purple tracer test individually with separate retune wire as find that one or both wires are open circuit. test each part of the circuit individually i.e. Instrument cluster plug to engine bay plug in order isolate faulty part of the wiring loom

I have continuity on both of those cables from the instrument cluster all the way to the fuel sender unit, the instrument panel is not faulty as I have tested it in another puma. So it could be the sender unit itself or is it possible that it is software related as the panle is not the original one paired with the ECU?
