There was a company called Bezzitec who produced a fold down single bed for a classic 90. I don't know if they'll do similar for the new one? James

It will be interesting to see how you get on with this, as I'm thinking about it along the same lines. The 110 would work with the seat moved forwards a bit, to give 6 clear ft. But for most the time, I'd be better off with the smaller 90.
It looks like if you remove the bottom of the rear seats they do fold flat, down to the level of aluminium bar that straddles the floor. And that appears to be an easy removal, with no sensors to worry about. But even with the passenger seat moved forward and angled to the dash to get access, it only looks like it will make another 200-300mm available. Which is still 300mm short of the needed 1.8m. So it looks like the only solution, without taking out the front passenger seat, is to have a platform that can be deployed, making a 'bunk' at window height.With the seat folded forwards it might give enough room. The other way I'm thinking this could be achieved is if the passenger seat in the forward most position can fold backwards, as flat as possible, which would then make available the who length of the cabin at a slightly elevated level. I need to get along to a dealer and take another look at how manoeuvrable those seats are. Taking the seat out completely looks like it could be a royal pain. |

You're thinking on the same lines as myself. I'm hoping that with a bit of creativity and enough play in the front passenger seat, an appropriate sleeping platform can be knocked up, as taking the passenger seat out completely I suspect will be a bit of a nause to do semi regularly.

I hope the delivery stays on schedule for you. I've yet to order mine, as I still work out what I can and can't get option wise, without going crazy with the additional costs. One thing I am adding though is air suspension, which some might think, if you're adding £1600 to the 90 build price, the difference in cost to the 110 is relatively small, and the 110 has AS as standard. So just get a 110. And sure, it is tempting for the extra space when I need it. But for the majority of the time I won't need that space, and the smaller overall size is going to be more beneficial for my uses.
As you say, with a bit of creativity, I'm sure its going to be possible and practical for the occasional overnight stop. I've likely got a wait until September by the time I get my order in, but I'll post some pictures of what I end up doing. |

^^^ I have to say the 90 looks too small to kip in, even for a short arse like me.

The 90 suits me much better for almost every application other than sleeping in, which I think with enough fettling will be achievable. It's more a case of how easily it can be done rather than "if". Where there's a will there's a way!

As a wee update.. I called into the dealer with the tape measure to have a look at just how feasible it would be to sleep in the back of a normal 90 vs 110.
Result is that I've changed my order to a 110
Whilst it would be do-able in the 90, with a bit of fettling and modding, it would leave very little space elsewhere in the cabin for the kit and equipment that I travel with. By comparison, the 110 would be ample big enough for sleeping and kit, without modification, and over a longer period of touring this becomes invaluable to a good night's sleep. A bit gutted though as the 90 is such a cool machine! Would be very interested to see anybody else's set up's for in car camping in either a 90 or 110 new defender? |

My preference is the 90 as it’s just for two people, everyday use and what I call ‘rally raids’ into Wales and longer treks into Morocco. With that in mind, a clam shell rooftop tent seems to be a good practical option, but when the weather turns bad an inside option, other than kipping in the car seat, would be interesting. I wonder if anyone has ever rigged up a hammock type of solution. It could stretch the length of the car, but I have no idea of mounting points. It might also take some practise getting in it, but then this option is for the more ‘adventurous’ types.

Yeah I agree. I love sleeping inside/living out of my td5 90, I find the short wheelbase such a good size for general touring etc. I think it would be easily achievable in a new HT 90 but then you have to for go the air susp / engine choice, which to me are essential for more technical off roading. The new passenger 90 I believe would be an absolute nightmare to convert into a tourer/camper without heavy interior modification which is why I’ve changed my order to a 110.

When I first saw that video it seemed a little creepy. But then I realised it's been shot as one of those ASMR things. Defender 90 HSE 250D 2022MY - Gave up after two failed orders
