Stuck brake drum hub
Hi,

Not a land rover but an old Triumph Spitfire thats been sitting for 10 years plus.

rear brake drum is stuck fast!

As i know you are all a very practical lot i thought i would put it out there for any tips or tricks. Massive kudos to the one who helps me lol

SO its a 1972 spitfire typical BL rusty rubbish, the drum that is not the car its actually in pretty good shape.

The drum will not turn at all, so i am thinking its the shoes/lining as opposed to rusted to the wheel hub???

I have tried a gentle persuaion with a nylon hammer its slightly moves but goes back when hit on the opposite site of the face.

I have soaked it in WD40 ( everything will be thoroughly cleaned/ replaced in any event so not worried about contamination.

Next stop is to try and release the brake shoes through the little window ( I would have done that but forgot my glasses and couldnt find the window!)

or

I have heard that you ca put longer bolts through the drum securing bolts and wind it off??? only issue is its an old thread size so nothing is easily to hand??

Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Snowy

When I have had to do this it begins with a lump hammer and tapping all around the drum to loosen up the drum on the studs and from the shoes. After that a cold chisel and lump hammer tapping from behind and working around the drum. It takes time but eventually the drum begins to move across the shoes and along the studs. The trick is methodically working your way around the drum.

Yes it is usually a lying on your back and taking your time job

If you feel you need something "extra" you can warm the drum (not the backing plate) a little and this sometimes helps release the drum from the shoes.

If you can retract the shoes as much as possible before starting the job so if there is a wear lip on the inside of the drum the shoes will clear it.

There are puller tools out there to do this too if you want to or can afford them. For me the tapping method has never failed even if it has taken time.

Good luck Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I can understand that, but be gentle and most importantly persistent.... Twisted Evil The casting is much stronger than you think just resist the temptation to let out your inner HULK...

Had the same problem Tuesday of this week. A Fabia that had been stood still since January had one rear drum stuck solid. Lots of progressive persuasion with various hammers and a cold chisel eventually brought success. Took the best part of an hour, but that also included removing the alloy wheel which had secured itself to the drum. It started with a kiss, never thought it would come to this.
SIII CSW Safari, limestone, (JAC 914N). Where is she now?

It's not a car, it's a way of life!
