Such a shame where the disco was pitched in the beginning right through to the D4. Practical, excellent interior space versus exterior size, capable on and off road and with a little nod to creature comforts and comfort.

I was looking to buy a D1 or D2 as a daily drive and to use as a bit of a workhorse, I looked at lots but they all seemed to have pretty bad corrosion issues even the ones advertised as excellent. In the end I bought a 24 year old Land Cruiser with the 3 litre diesel. It does drive like a Discovery in many ways but the build quality is streets ahead on the LC.

It is a shame they rot so much, It would be nice to find a solid one to use as a daily driver. As you say they are very practical. The load space is really good compared to a 110 utility.
This one still has a tidy interior. Click image to enlarge . |

My personal view is that the Disco 1 through Disco 4 are probably the best true multipurpose private vehicles the world has ever seen, and are not likely to be bettered now. My own favourite is the Disco2, which had many of the Disco1 problems ironed out, is a little larger, and (provided you didn't get the air suspension) had the best handling and most durable suspension set up, and of course the Td5 motor. Functional, fairly sophisticated, but simple enough to maintain entirely yourself.
It is just a crying shame that the D2 is so prone to chassis rust at the back (does anyone know why they are so rust-prone form the back axle backwards, there must be a reason - the front doesn't rust, just the back)? I know that the D3 and D4 have many fans, but my personal preference is for the D2. WIth current prices (when a D2 is worth more as parts than as a running vehicle) you get an unbelievable amount of vehicle for your money. Last edited by blackwolf on 26th Apr 2021 10:10am. one of the lads on the 306 forum loves discos, he has a few defenders too. He swears by the disco, he was wounded when i told him what happened to me, He fell in love with my TD5 defender.
Another 306 owner also got his hands on a disco 2, but got a arsey with me, and started to bad mouth defenders, ( he was arsey on the forum anyway) one disco 2 owner gunned him down in flames though, by backing what i said i can have a word with my mate, he may know a disco 1 owner for the interior Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

thoroughly loved my D1's, reliable comfortable and just kept plodding on. Done a lot of welding to them over the years, all body related.
No have a D2 as a workhorse, whilst im not 100% sold on its auto box, its a great work horse and i have really taken to it, even considering putting a galv chassis on it as it is getting tired. Still have my D4 too, which without doubt is the most practical car i've ever had. used for work too. 110 is becoming a garage queen |

Guy came to do some fencing at the weekend in his R reg Disco 1. Not the prettiest but perfect work vehicle. I think it has more weld than original metal but it still has an MOT!

It is a very difficult decision, isn't it? A vehicle worth perhaps £1k to £3k, a galv chassis costing about the same as the vehicle, and the result after the work has a market value probably not much more than it was before! On the face of it, it would be a barmy thing to do. But the end result is actually an extremely usable vehicle, better than many new vehicles, and worth far more in real terms than its "market value". I think that with a galv chassis, agreed value insurance would be essential, but what is the value of a Disco2 with a galv chassis? There are so few about it is hard to estimate. I have to say that I am seriously considering fitting a galv chassis to mine when the dreaded day comes. |

Couldn't agree more Blackwolf. I own a few Defenders/Series but have recently bought a 2004 low mileage disco 2 Commercial. Remapped and some decent all terrains and seems to do everything a defender 90 would do but in more refinement! Really liking it.
But as you say they all have rear half chassis corrosion. I have just ordered a quarter chassis replacement and I did the sums on a full galvanized chassis but would have ended up costing 4X what I paid for the original Disco! |

i know, i paid £2300 for mine, ES Premium with 117k miles, cheap i think. Bought to replace my 200tdi D1 and intended to 'run into the ground' but i love it. Just fitted some All terrains on to it too, fully operational air and ACE means it drives really well. i can't see me getting rid of it so a galv is definitely on the cards. |

An early Discovery is a nice vehicle.
But a cheap as chips (and economical) workhorse without the rotting chassis and rusty tinwork is the Freelander1, Td4 diesel. So overlooked...... |
