Defender steering box woes.
2004 TD5 LWB

On the last MOT I received advisories for too much play in the 4 bolt steering box - fair enough.

The box is not leaking and seams to work ok but the middle dead zone is a bit wide.

Problem - the adjuster is seized - lock nut comes undone with the adjuster screw, and no way to get enough purchase on them without stripping the adjuster with all the crap in the way.

So... if I take the box off - do you think I will be able to free it off with some heat etc when I can get to it?

Or - if going to the work of taking it off, should I replace (118k on the clock)?

What is the current recommended replacement? (New/recon)

Your advice much appreciated.

at that age and mileage treat it to a new or reconditioned one.

i've just used nps national power steering at leicester with good results, they advertise on ebay but being a bit old school if you ring you'll get better and dare i say it cheaper service. take on one off fit new back on the road same day or send yours away and they will overhaul it and send it back

Yes, more I think about it the more I’m thinking a new replacement may be a better bet, give me another 100k plus miles before I need to worry again.

Are you sure it's the steering box?

Mine's got over double the mileage yours has and everytime I think it's got a bit of play it's something else - TREs, wheel bearings, etc. Ed
