exhaust smell
Hi. My 110 2002 defender Td5 - 310.000 km do smell quite a lot like a diesel....I do not ever mount my trailer with engine running🤢 eventhoughh it is warm... There is almost no smoke at cold start and when running - does not use much oil ( 1/2 a litre pr 5.000 km)
I was wondering if my cat is done - I think it is the original - and if a working cat reduces the smell?? Also looked in to mounting a DPF instead of the cat ( I have the P15 engine) if that would reduce the smell.
People are getting more and more negative about exhaust fumes so if anyone knows about the above it would be greatly appreciated - I know a DPF is pricey but I plan to keep my car as long as possible.
Regards

I see 2 problems:

1. How will the ecu know that a regen is required? I do not think there are many who went down this route and trigger anyone to make a special map for Td5 with dpf combo.

2. Probably on the books it will still be a Euro3. Just think ahead to when the EU starts making tighter restrictions on emissions (environmental tax).

Good Td5s command a good price, because the purists says it is the last and best of the original Defender. Your other option maybe to trade it with a 2.2. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hi. The DPF that is approved for a TD5 - in Denmark and Germany i Think - is a open type DPF which does not require regeneration. It puts the car in Euro4.. it is pretty expensive about 1.400 gbp - but then you are allowed in the Big cities - at least for a while.
But does the dpf help reducing the smell? Or more than a working cat?

Good to hear that for Denmark. Does not apply where I live.
What I can say is that we have 4 defenders in the family. The 2.4 and Td5 smell terrible when they are started to take out of the garage. My 2.2 do not even notice that a car was started. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

The cat makes a massive difference to the smell. So perhaps yours is knackered.

yup, that stuff animal in there will make it smell different.

if it's working, it should smell somewhat nicer than raw exhaust. I'm assuming that the fuelling of the engine is correct as many have been mucked about with.

However, without the cat, you also have performance gains when mapped correctly and the passenger side is cooler on a long drive.

decisions, decisions. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At 125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island.
