Could this end JLR’s EV ideas for private buyers?
What the headline fails to mention is more important - that the price ceiling is also to be lowered to £35000 from £40000 reducing choice and really limiting buyers to so called “City Cars’” with less range

I doubt it. Thats a 50% reduction ISTR. Eventually the financial doping will end, probably some time after the 2030 date - which will get pushed out anyway.

Manufacturers will just have to get more-efficient/accept-narrower-margins going forward - the fact that the very same car in the US is priced 10's of percent lower than in the UK/Europe shows how much fat is in every vehicle that rolls off the production line. Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

It won’t make a bit of difference to the majority of new car buyers (I.e. people who don’t actually buy them outright and instead PCP/lease them). What matters to people is that the monthlies are affordable. Even if these nudge up a bit, if it affects all new cars of a certain type/price point then it doesn’t put any one manufacturer at a disadvantage.

Limiting the ceiling at £35k could be a good move as many EV's start just above that so makers may be inclined to drop prices. Also folks buying a Taycan, Tesla S or GTron don't need hand-outs and will buy regardless. However lowering the grant again is a backwards move and shows real a lack of forward thinking, commitment and understanding by the government. They have chosen to lead the way in banning ICE vehicles and need to use more carrot and less stick. WARNING.

What does a current PHEV from JLR actually do in real terms electric only mileage?

It seems Merc are taking a long term view:

About the average 20 miles, the newest German stuff like the 45e is more like 40 (13 kWh vs 24 kWh battery). Either way, the P400e only has 140 bhp of electric power (vs 110 in a BMW 45e), so it’s still only a trundling around thing when in EV mode.

I did a fag pack sum for the P400e, and given the size of the motor and the battery, if you could pull full power and drain the battery from 100% right down to 0%, the run time would be @ 7 minutes and 40 seconds.

I'm sure if you factor in real world variables there are some things that would both add time and reduce time:

Add time ~ lighter right foot, regen braking.

Reduce time ~ battery would cutoff well before 0%, use of lights and other ancillaries.

Question is did I do my sums right? It reminds me of the Veyron, where it's supposed to only have a fuel tank that can last 12 mins at max speed.

They’re always going to be limited by the battery capacity - the 45e’s is huge by PHEV standards, but a Taycan Turbo S has nearly four times the kWh.

Tim. Iv just bought a Tesla and picking up tomorrow. Received my 2.5k discount only with hrs to spare. The cutoff date is 31st and car must be paid in full to receive this. The discount will cease to exist after the 31st.
