Props are not greased in production but only have a smear applied to the inner pins to aid assembly and if you are lucky you will have grease nipples fitted as mine had two missing and the two that were fitted were dry.. do not wait to 1st service as the damage is done by then. Dealers don't grease on PDi... 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

You are right. First Gbox was 2 liters overfilled! Second one, I checked before fitting it: had ATF fluid on it So, yes, pour your own GL-4 75W-90 Puma 110" SW

It seems my 110 came from the factory with the transfer box only part full of oil. It was picked up on the first service. Topped up and now much quieter.
I contacted my dealer who asked me to take the truck in asap, I had a job in London yesterday so they could check it out, all checked out and no signs of leakage. I would like to know your opinion about the Motul GEAR 300 75W-90 100% Synthetic – Ester based lubricant.
Specs: API GL4 and GL5 / MIL-L-2105D TDS available at the following link: http://www.motul.fr/system/product_descrip...1290086772 It's stated that the above oil is "Suitable for any type of seal and yellow material used in gearboxes design" May I use it in both transmission and transfer unit ? Thanking in advance for any advice! |

Appears that some synth GL-5 are fine with yellow metals. Not sure if too slippery for the synchros though. Personally I would stick with the GL-4 (only). I use Shell ASXR 75W90 for everything else. Puma 110" SW

well thats decided then. I'm going to change both oils next week. I had a good look under the car and with the help of the workshop manual that someone kindly posted a link to I found the fill and drain holes. Boy is the gearbox filler hard to access with an allen key ! - especially without ramps but if you peer across the chassis your eyes are just about level with it and a long flexible tube will be needed to fill. The Tbox filler is just about do-able with a flexible/jointed 1/2" socket but its squashed between the handbrake drum and a pipe. I've already got a sore neck from greasing the props but its all peace of mind stuff

There are some washer on the drain plug ? If yes, I must discard it and put a new one or simply reuse the old ?

I can answer that one now !
No washers just 2 x 1/2" sqare drive plugs and 2 x 8mm hex plugs. Abit of thread sealant or PTFE will do no harm though |

The factory use an automated system to fill the fluids - and as the line is single car at that point there shouldn't be any mix-ups...i can understand under and overfills; although the computer does the pouring! Mike

Seven weeks old and 1,800 miles on mine now but, after reading this thread, I'd booked her into a local garage (recommended by other Land Rover drivers) for a check over. Just collected her, everything as it should be and she now has fresh oil and filter, nips greased and levels checked.
Bought a front bumper from Duckworth Parts which arrived on Wednesday. Cut some 35mm holes in it for a pair of recovery swivels ( Flatdog 4x4, ordered at 15:05, arrived next day 08:30) and drilled some holes for spotlights ( IPF from 4x4AT.com) and then took it over to Jacksons in Yeadon to have it powder coated gloss black. Collected it this morning along with some OEM endcaps from Akers and Battle in Skipton. Working over the week-end but might assemble it all unless I decide to get instead. I'm not planning on using the recovery swivels to get dragged out of any swamps but yesterday, as is often the case, I had 90 metres of heavy three-phase steel-wire armoured cable to pull around a farmyard/building site. Spliced the end onto a D-shackle, hooked it to towbar then lifted the drum onto a scaffy pole and dragged the cable off with the 90. So they're mainly to make that sort of thing easier. Handy to tie a to as well. |
