Reduction of 165% ???
I consider myself of average intelligence, and I did once get a grade C a-level in maths, but I can’t for the life of me get my head around this BBC News article.

Climate change: Jet fuel from waste 'dramatically lowers' emissions https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-56408603

In the story the writer claims that carbon emissions from flying could be reduced by 165%. How can that be? If emissions were zero surely that would be reduction of only 100%. So how can we have 165% reduction Question Question Question 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

They actually say "The authors of the new study say the fuel cuts emissions by 165% compared to fossil energy."

Still gobblydygook as could mean anything or nothing

Long, long time since I was at school but I've always believed that a reduction of 100% would be equal to zero as you say. Defender 90XS SW

one must assume little trees come out the back and absorb 65% worth of the original emissions

photo synthesis?

or could it be due to the manufacturing being greener too the overall emissions are reduced by 165% of the planes emissions?

...I don't know. got any easy questions and I'll come back to this Mr. Green

They are adding all the environment savings together, I.e. the saving between harvesting this methane fuel over another rather than letting it loose naturally into the environment. Also the benefits of any production process with transport including the variance of using this methane over kerosene in the aircraft.

All these little changes they have calculated collectively equate to more than 100% which is a maximum impossible for each element individually

Not sure if that articulates what I understand it to be and mean? Ride like you stole it!!

Thats exactly how I read it also, for example they save 100% on the actual engine emissions as well as not taking up landfill space with the waste used for the conversion process and hence there is no methane emissions produced from the landfill either.......

But then surely that should be reduction measured against the landfill and aviation combined? You can’t attribute the reduction in one to something else can you? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

As long as you don’t exhale during the journey otherwise that will be a 412% increase in emissions on the 165% reduction on the 100% baseline. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Yes, Slideywindows. You are spot on Thumbs Up

It is the inconvenient truth that many of our those people who are bleating on about saving the planet from destruction still demand their foreign holiday to the Med or America or further in some cases every year. And many of the same are not happy with just the one but fly on holiday two and three times - after all if you are only paying £20 for a Ryanair flight, it can't produce as much pollution as a British Airways flight costing £400, can it ? Laughing
It's a bit like Formula 1 talking about reducing emissions from the Cars. A gallant effort by the PR machine. Look at the carbon footprint of trucking / flying all the people, equipment and cars around the globe and then ask the question, are the cars the real pollution problem or are we just trying to fix something which isn't the problem?

I fly and I watch Formula 1 Very Happy
