My dealership has confirmed that it's still permanent AWD but there is an "intelligent" system that monitors and delivers more/less power to each wheel (rather than front/rear axle as standard AWD do) depending on the driving conditions.
I believe it's available only on 6 cylinder diesel engines. |

This text comes from the Land rover website: "Permanent All Wheel Drive is standard on Land Rover Defender except for those fitted with the new D300 6-cylinder engine. The D300 engine features Intelligent All Wheel Drive for greater fuel efficiency utilizing Two Wheel Drive capability where appropriate."
I think this applies all 6-cylinder diesels, despite only D300 is mentioned. |

Some kind of disconnect-able clutch pack in the centre diff and another one in the front axle which allows drive to be disconnected under some conditions apparently.

I would also think the inclusion of a front differential would also enhance the off road capabilities

This doesn’t appear to change the existing front diff at all, it’s purely a CO2-driven thing - free-wheeling hubs MKII.

Just concerned that a stationary front prop, diff and axles will take some time to speed up before they will contribute to the vehicle drive, which when driving on ice/snow is not what you want. Hopefully the intelligence is such that the disconnect only happens on dry surfaces with good traction.
Seems like a lot of fuss for saving 1,7% on fuel |

So no centre differential in MY21.
I wonder how 1.7% fuel savings stack up against what I assume are 2 x wear/tear clutch replacement costs? You have to question whether these changes are being driven by genuine engineering development to make the vehicles function better in the driving sense or are just artificial additional complexity driven by the Co2 fines framework. |

Presumably when you set TR to Grass, Gravel, Snow setting the car will be set up accordingly. Having owned a few Fl2s, Disco Sport, Evoque and currently a Velar I have no concerns about the abilities of a system like that. My Velar is exceptional in the snow, granted our snow isn’t anywhere near as bad as you guys, but during the beast from the east it never struggled with traction. On Evoques this system was fitted as an option on some models and standard on petrol engined models from 2016MY up to recently. On those cars it disengaged the drive to the rear wheels and I read somewhere that the rear drive was only disengaged above 28mph and would re-engage in 1/300th sec if any slippage was detected at the front. I don’t recall any posts on the Evoque forum about lack of confidence in the system or failures but also it wasn’t a widely specced option here and few petrol engined Evoques were sold in the UK. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

This isn’t the same as the Evoque system, and I’m certain it’s CO2-driven. Not a great deal of info on it so far - centre diff is obviously new to allow variable torque split.

Maybe all this added complexity will make my “simple” old / obsolete D240 New Defender more desirable come selling time............. but I doubt the dealers will say that though.
