A bit more Google-based research and I’ll definitely be talking to the tester:
The MOT guidance is online and seems quite clear. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection...-equipment I didn’t find anything in the guidance about the scope to use reversing lights as side-lights. Nor is there anything about putting an LED bulb into a light- unless it is a headlight when it says: “Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.” Raking back over my law education and by expressly covering the position of headlights but being silent on other lights means other lights aren’t affected by this rule. Cheers, Guy. |

The road vehicles lighting regs (Schedule 2 part 5 Ma Lord) states that front position lamps must have an Approval Mark or a British Standard Mark.
Part 2 section 14 (Filament lamps) states that no filament lamp other than a filament lamp referred to in the Designation of Approval Marks Regulations in– (a)regulation 4 and Schedule 2, items 2 or 2A, 8, 20, 37 or 37A; or (b)regulation 5 and Schedule 4, item 18, shall be fitted to any such lamp. ^^^^ This is the clause that means you can't put LED bulbs in halogen headlights or any other lights that are approved as the combination isn't what was 'approved' The debate therefore is around whether the approval mark for reversing lamps also approves the lamp as a front posiiton lamp, I suspect not. It's all in here: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/contents/made Reversing lights will be far too bright , sidelights are typically 5w bulbs, reverse light bulbs are up to 24w. As blackwolf mentioned, The MOT testers guide isn't the law, thats the Road Vehicle Lightings Regulations |

The UK regulations originate in the 1980s and have been regularly amended since then. There isn’t a consolidated update online without paying. However, the relevant markings are set out in EU regulations https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN...mp;from=PT
My plan now is to buy a Perei reversing light, to replace the original one, and see how it is marked and decide next steps from there. (I’ll get the matching fog at the same time.) Can anyone tell me what the markings are on their Perei or other brand LED sidelights? I can see that I may end up having to compromise so next time I’m in a car park and see a Defender with the ray-gun style of LED units I’ll try and note the markings (without getting biffed on the nose). Daytime running lights are at least as bright as reversing lights and, based on the MOT guidance, it seems DRLs are permitted to stay on when the headlights are turned on and/or to function as sidelights. So I’m not sure about the ‘brightness’ point made by @blackwolf. But it will all come down to the markings. Cheers, Guy. |

youre right in that it was amended in 1994, 2005 and 2017.
All 3 amendments are easily available online (just search for "road vehicles lighting (amendment) regulations". None of the amendments change the rule about filament lamps in the 1989 version or the requierment for sidelights to be carry an approval mark, they just clarify the different approval requirements, primarily keeping up with the EU rules. With regards to the DRL comparison, there are also specific rules around DRLs and how they must be wired / when they come on etc. Sidelights don't come under those regs. If it's just the look of the LED side lights you're trying to get away from, I've got these on the 130. https://defenderupgrades.co.uk/product/1352/ They have the added security benefit that they can't be unscrewed from the outside to get at the alarm etc. Saying that, I've just seen the price of them!! Good job mine had them fitted when Ibought it |

If you're installing LED blinkers, I highly recommend this relay. No need to have load resistors installed for each blinker.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RDX-4-Pin-Flash...0952858198 It doesn't keep the instrument cluster towing light always on and works fine with incandescent bulbs trailers. |
