I finished volume one of Gibbon's Decline and fall of the Roman Empire and have started volume two. Gibbon's work is in six volumes and runs to 3000 plus pages. My question is, has anyone here ever read the complete work without a break. I am thinking that when I finish volume two I'll take a break from the Romans and maybe read something different (lighter!). 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Yep I am enjoying it but reading volume one I began to wonder, why would anyone want to be a Roman Emperor? The lack of maps is a drawback but luckily I have other sources for maps of the period. Well written but I think a little break from it now and then would be beneficial especially as I have gone back over chapters and the copious notes. Always wanted to read it so it was on my to do list. Mine is the six volume Dent edition. Didn't want to feel guilty over not going from page one to page 3000 plus in one go. Don't think my humble brain could handle it!! 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
