Hi
I am trying to fix a wiring fault with our 1959 Austin A35 Van. Given there are not many wires it is taking me more time to figure out what is going on so a fresh view might help. Here's the van, it sits waiting for my Son to carry on after Uni/life so I am on care and maintenance duties. It had a new loom about 10 years ago and its gone virtually nowhere since its make over (the rat look is intentional ) Click image to enlarge232 by Richard Holmes, on Flickr So after dusting it off since it has been sitting on the drive for about a year some fresh petrol and a loan battery it started first time and after a few checks of brakes and the like took it round the block all good except it blew one of the 4 fuses knocking out the indicators and brake lights. Now here is the issue The rear lights are twin side and stop. Checking the wiring I have a feed to the brake light side (on test lamp) but if I put it into the holder (Changed) with (bulbs changed) in the feed goes dead. Remove the bulb and the feed is live, The light shares a common earth and the same fault exists if I put a temp earth to the holder The side light works Given the simplicity of it all I cant figure why the feed goes dead (fuse not blown) in the holder but live when its just a wire connected to the same earth via test lamp Any thoughts or suggestions please? 2010 XS USW 1957 Series One 88 diesel 1958 Series One 88 4x2 |

Thanks
Its now negative earth. Its been all good till the fuse popped, nothing had changed and was working. I would have thought it would have blown the fuse again but just this odd issue. Feels like an earth fault but I cant figure how. 2010 XS USW 1957 Series One 88 diesel 1958 Series One 88 4x2 |

So the live supply comes from battery to fuse, from fuse to brake light switch, then to the bulb holder which is also connected to earth.
Is that correct. Have you tried bypassing the brake pedal switch. |

Hi. Not tried that yet, here is the wiring layout. The switch must be working as it has power at the lamp (wiring). It just fails when in the holder (both rear lamps are the same).

That circuit diagram must be wrong.
The red wire is correct and feeds the tail light and number plate light. However the wire shown coming from the stop lamp switch is shown joining the red wire. This appears to be your problem. The wire from the stop lamp switch should connect to the green with purple wire to feed only the stop lights. What do you think? |

landy andy, spot on. I re checked everything and it was not till I made up a short bypass wire (holding it on the terminals did not work) it made the connection.
Thanks for the prompt to go back to basics 2010 XS USW 1957 Series One 88 diesel 1958 Series One 88 4x2 |
