Air in the fuel pump when first keying on...
TD5 90, 66k on the clock.

No issues before I changed the fuel filter.

Changed filter, and whenever you turn the key to position 2 and the fuel pump primes, it gurgles and sounds like the system is full of air, which subsequently runs round the fuel lines (you can hear it circulate round the engine bay, return to the tank) and then after a priming operation or 2, clears, goes quiet, and no issues.

Turn off and restart in less than 30 minutes.... No air. Restart the following morning. Lots of air.

I've replaced this thing.

And I've also done the fuel priming operation several times with throttle 5 X apply on key on.

Anyone know what to try next?

I would check around fuel filter head for moisture incase it has become porous, if not swap fuel filter for a very very high quality one incase yours is faulty or not sealed properly. The next step would be swap the fuel injector seals. Main dealer parts only.

Did the rubber seal come off with the old filter or stay stuck on the filter head? 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread

Thanks all.

Answers to the thoughts...

The filter head is bone dry and was working fine before I changed the filter.

Rubber seal came off with the old filter and new one was on the new filter.

Haven't really wanted to try cranking it till the air has passed round and got itself out each cold start in case it knackers the HP pump with insufficient diesel to lubricate it. But starts instantly once the air has circulated round and the pumps gone quiet. What's the thinking in each case? Does start/doesn't start?

How much have you driven it since doing the filter? I find mine gurgles for a few days after changing.

Also there is no HP pump to worry about it, the TD5 has camshaft driven unit injectors. I find that even the extra fuel return pipe on the 15P head doesn't get rid of all the air in the fuel rail so takes a while for it to move through.
