Possible 300tdi engine failure
Driving on the m62 today, uphill section towards Manchester from Junction 23 and all of a sudden I had a complete loss of power and the engine cut out. No big bang or anything noisy, just heard all the drive train slacken off as the engine cut out.

I managed to get across to the shoulder and tried to see what the problem was, no visible fluids leaking, nothing to suggest turbo failure, everything appeared in working order but clearly isn’t.

Engine will turn over on the starter but won’t kick into life.

It’s a 16L 300tdi, 207k on the clock, but well serviced and looked after, any ideas would be appreciated!

First thing I would be checking is the stop solenoid. Check the live feed to it. I had a similar issue the multi block connector had live going in to it but no live coming out due to a corroded terminal.

Then remove the oil filler cap and check the valve train moves when it’s turned over. If not then the timing belt has gone.

I got it recovered by a mate and it’s currently in his workshop.

I’d doubt it was the timing belt, as that was done less than 5k miles ago.

Electrical gremlins or fuelling issues were my first thoughts, but it’s hard to check at the side of the motorway, soaking wet and miserable 😀

Bottom half of the engine turns, top half doesn’t.

Rebuild, new engine or sell it.

oh so that was the timing belt. You'll need the head sorted now everything else should be ok. The pushrods and valvle guides, valves etc might be all scrap now Crying or Very sad

The thing that worries me is the timing belt was redone at 201k, it’s only done 6k since then. Surely it can’t be belt failure, considering they’re meant to be good for 70k?

Cheers Bodstruck 👍

It was done by a friend of mine who’s a mechanic, he’s got a lot of experience with LR stuff.

It was a Bearmach kit with a new tensioner and bits, including a Dayco belt.

Sorry to hear, but personally, I would not sell as is, so rebuild or renew engine depending on diagnosis would be my advice Thumbs Up Rob

Recent replacement is no guarantee of longevity - sadly there are many poor quality parts around these days. It’s sometimes a struggle to find properly branded belt tensioners for example.

Belt change, new push rods, check cam followers and valve gear for damage (unlikely) and you’re back up and running.

^^^^ as James said above, an afternoon's work will have you back on the road. No need for new engines or rebuilds.

Does the mechanic really know what he is doing? Does he have the correct Torqueleader gauge for setting the tensioner? Is the injector pump fitted with the later bracket to postion the pump correctly to stop it running out of line?
