There'll be a handful of yellow ones and red/grey ones going in the next few months due to the government privatising UK Search and Rescue!

Perhaps I will hang on for one of them then!
Yes a sad end. I just hope the new service is just as robust and able to get to those that need them 24/7 |

I think there's at least one stilll flying - it's due at the Southport Airshow in a few weeks. Will be curious to see how much they go for - did they get rid of all the Gazelles they had? |

Never understood why if you owned a multi million pound yacht you could get free recovery on the high seas but if my 20 year old lightweight broke down on the side of the M62 REME weren't interested? Anyone know how many Sea Kings are being scrapped? |

There'll probably be around 30 yellow ones and 8 grey/red ones in total.

all of them ...Bristows have got the SAR contract with HMCG and have already replaced the Scots ones
The Seaking was designed as the S61 in 1961 and the UK Westland version entered service in 1968 ..... so that is a long time in service Most are being replaced with the modern S92 - (which has many of the same features as the US Black Hawk) and AgustaWestland AW189 aircraft We fly the S92 out to work, and I have used the Shetland SAR S92 a few times ... great bits of kit!! However like most on here I’m sad to see the SeaKing go but its time for better kit to take over https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westland_Sea_King https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_S-92 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Her_Majesty%27s_Coastguard info on the new service and bases here ... http://www.bristowgroup.com/helicopter-services/uk-sar/ Click image to enlarge S92 on the roof at work! Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 |

I've just read that for every hour in the air the Sea Kings needed 30 hours of maintenance

Thats not true. They do require more maintenance than a modern aircraft would, but no way near 30 hours.
S92 is a very capable aircraft, although the rotorwash is something I wouldn't want to be underneath if I needed to be rescued! And as for the AW189 that was destined to replace about half of the sea kings- it's not in service yet! The UK SAR fiasco is the best kept secret of poor procurement in Britain! The merlin would've been a much more capable replacement. More power, more payload, military operated and already in service. The only downside of Merlin is rotorwash, which is the same situation we have now! |

Well that's quite a widely quoted figure and in the source I've linked to above is actually a quote from a military bod? |

Quite believable. I was in the RAF for a considerable time working on a wide range of aircraft. 'Trade based servicing' if the aircraft carried weapons, had ejector seats or pyrotechnics would involve the following 5 trades: Airframe, Avionics, Electrical, Propulsion and Weapons. A simple after flight or before flight servicing could take maybe 2 hours X 5 people. This doesn't include any rectification, scheduled component changes or things like pumping gas (that alone could take several hours on a large transport aircraft) high frequency items such as wheel or brake changes that would necessitate the jacking of the aircraft. You also had other individuals co-ordinating the servicings and the rectification teams themselves that would pick up and sort out any defects. Many people do not realise the time involved in either getting an aircraft in the air or making sure it is fit for the next sortie whenever that may be. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

I was at Wattisham in Suffolk last year on an 'introduction to crash recovery' event. We spoke to some of the crew who all felt the same. Time for new kit.

An after flight inspection takes two guys about 30minutes. SAR engineering teams are mainly cross trained and so we dont have to have a bunch of different tradesmen doing the inspections. A refuel takes ten minutes max.
However widely quoted the figures are, they arent true. I've many years experience in two RAF ageing aircraft fleets. The press are keen to justify the new aircraft. The issue at the moment is that the aircraft just arent doing the job they're supposed to. They regularly dont fly with a paramedic, NVGs or a FLIR camera. Things the RAF fly with every day.... In a year or so, it'll be very capable, but not yet... |
