Think to be fair there well due a replacement. Certainly still look the job though, heres a pic we took of a mud rescue and one in action, was impressive to see working rather than a demo or show. Hope the new ones are as professionally run. Very Happy

There'll probably be around 30 yellow ones and 8 grey/red ones in total.

From Hansard in March of this year we had:

Sea King HAR3/A 20 (yellow ones)
Sea King HU5 11 (red/grey ones)

I think other variants have an extended flying life so they won't disappear from the skies completely.

Does that 30 hours per hour of flight take into account minor and major servicing cos thats going to bump up the average servicing hours, especially if you don't actually count the 'hands on hours' but use the XX days/weeks at 24 hours a day.

A day of servicing/maint per hour of flight does sound steep, especially on a fleet thats on 24 hour cover with a limited number of frames, they would be hardly ever avaliable.

Modern jets should have much shorter servicing times both in regular use and in depth maint, as design has generally been much more servicing aware than on a lot of older frames, that said an awful lot of servicing time reductions on exisiting types have been achieved by 'not looking' at as much as we used to, which inevitably leads to overrun when the 2nd line boys get stuck in, or you get an initially small fault to investigate but once you start pulling panels off find 'surprises'.

Large jet trade based servicing always seemed to take way longer than a couple of composites could do it, I'll leave the reasons why to my and your own opinion.

Got my own opinions on all of this naturally, from a previous life before bailing to the evils of O&G. 3 Landrovers

As an aside, I seem to recall a cost of £40k per hour to keep a Tornado in the air. The military boys and girls play with some expensive and complex toys.

There are two aircraft at each SAR base. Each aircraft flies on average 3 hours a day, even though they are allocated 4 hours training. If each aircraft took 30 hours servicing per flying hour, that'd be 90 hours maintenance a day. Between an average of four engineers/maintainers, that 22.5 hours each. Add that to the 3 hours we flew and you've got yourself a 25.5 hour day....

30 Hours is a ridiculous figure. The only time maintenance becomes an issue is if a major component needs to be changed, or a part isnt readily available.

Sea King costs about £14k an hour to fly.. Not cheap!

Mike - I'm sure you have the experience but have you forgotten about factoring in the longer term items - engine swaps, etc. over the whole life rather than just forward maintenance?

The MOD has a whole classification of "Sustainment Fleet" for those aircraft which are undergoing planned depth maintenance or upgrade programmes.

I bet the hours add up quickly if you include these.
