Heart Broken - New engine required apparently for my 90
Defender 90 (300 TDi) decided to ground to a halt with mechanical failure on Xmas Eve and my local garage just informed me that the "engine has locked and it needs to be replaced".

I need to have a F2F meeting with the mechanic, but would welcome other's experiences and options / suggestions please, especially on engine replacements (if it's come to this !).

Ultimately, my aim is to have my 90 roadworthy again.

What will be entailed in marrying this up with the transfer box in the Landy

To answer the OP, 300 TDi engines are generally very reliable, probably easiest and cheapest to stick with the same.
Don't know what's wrong with yours or what it will cost to fix.

If you need a 'good' used engine to replace it, buying a complete running 300TDi Discovery might take some of the risk away. Buy wisely, good mechanical condition and history, but poor body, and it should be cheap. If it's got MOT, run it for a while to make sure the engine's worth swapping. Sell anything left over for scrap or break it if the axles and gearbox are good.
Want to increase the gearing of the 90 to make it quieter at speed? Fit the Discovery transfer box too.

Hope you can get sorted. Thumbs Up

Did the cambelt snap?
Depending on the relationship with your local garage, it might be worth a second opinion from an independent Land Rover specialist.

A refurbished Tdi is expensive... second hand ones can be bought in a Discovery as below but buy wisely. Yours may be repairable.

Interested to hear the verdict from your mechanic. BORG - Bucks & Oxon 4x4 Response Group
