2.2 Cooling Issues
Hi all,

I've taken the time to look through the forum and I can see there are many posts regarding the cooling system on the Puma. Unfortunately I now find myself having a similar issue, namely ...

The vehicle gets almost (just under half way) up to temperature (eventually!) and then as soon as I stop and it's idling, drops the temperature down to practically nothing.

It started doing this last winter and I've lived with it over the summer due to the warner weather. It still behaved the same but the warmer ambient temperature meant it was doing it less. With winter coming and the colder nights, I know that as soon as we are in frost territory it is going to be a nightmare to defrost and use on cold mornings.

Having asked around a bit about this issue, it appears to be a common problem. My vehicle was absolutely fine until around 40,000 miles and then all of a sudden at around 45,000 miles I noticed this issue developing. It certainly has not had this issue from new so clearly something has changed.

I have had the thermostat replaced by my local Land Rover garage (ex main agent, now independent) and it actually made it worse. I had them change it again with the result not really any better.

So I am out of ideas, hence this post. Some people have suggested changing the oil cooler thermostat. Others have just said, they all do it. Well mine wasn't doing it and now does, so I am keen to get to the bottom of what the issue is.

Any comments / help / advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.
(it's a 63 plate 2.2 90 btw).

I'm not sure that they all do it Confused

One possibility is the viscous fan coupling. If this has failed then the fan will be actively running all of the time and overcool the engine. You'd be able to hear it at idle, though. Darren

Apologies - I've realised I have actually posted two threads regarding the same issue - my bad! Anyway, for the purposes of this particular thread I have the update below:

Just found this video on YouTube:

Its a ford 2.0 TDCi engine - but the theory of why it's not getting up to temperature properly may still hold true on a 2.2 TDCi. I'm no mechanic but I have not seen this possible resolution anywhere.

I'm sure the more mechanically minded may have a view?
