I used old male and female plugs and made a loom, with a relay built in, to make it plug and play.
Now at about 5 or 6 years and no problems. In the last 20 years I've lost 3 switches, so I got fed up and made it. It's just one relay to remove the ampere load from the switch. |

Thanks jfh for the info, i will be trying to make up a relay loom and will be doing this hopefully sometime next year
so on the way home last night and guess what, yes the lights went out so the next thing to change is the yellow relay under the fuses, i think it's something to do with the dim dip lights, the one in Millie is still the original one, so fingers crossed 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. If I were you Clayton, I'd just remove the dim dip completely. I've done that on mine a while ago.
If my memory's correct I think the most 'difficult' thing was making up a short jumper cable to cross two points on another of the relays. At least it makes the wiring simpler and easier to fault trace. As I understand it it's also better for the headlight bulbs, that they're not burning at low voltage. Certainly if you're going to consider replacing parts of that system anyway, then I'd thinking about ditching it. All you need to do is unplug the dim dip resistor.
If you make up a loom (in the Boomslang style) you will have to disable the dim dip because otherwise you'll be trying to energise your relays on a reduced voltage. |

So to bring this thread hopefully to a close and the final update
As Millie went into my indie for some needed work on her, i asked my indy to have a look at my lights to see if he can find the fault, so i went back to pick Millie up, on the 3rd day and he had found the problem with the lights, there was not one fault but three The first fault was the new light switch i had put in, it was not working at 100%. the second problem was the pink relay for the dim dip lights was not working, so he did away with the relay and added some wires Click image to enlarge The third fault was the yellow relay under the fuses, he changed that one for one he new worked 100% So my headlights work all ok and now i don't have dim dip anymore and my headlights, dipped beam and main beam are much brighter than before, well happy with the out come 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Sounds like a result, Clayton. Hopefully, that will be the last of your headlight woes. Darren

I will put money on the switch killing the two relays, I think you can get these relays off most MG Rover cars. I have a few spare relays off the rover metro, ( i took the fuse box system out of the car) So it might be worth you having a look at a few rovers ( if they are still in scrap yards now) just for handful of relays. I cannot remember if it was the wiper one or the light one i tested from the metro, and it worked.
