Here is another company that builds cars with poor QC and a poor reliablity record yet it’s got increasing sales and making profits that traditional car makers can only dream of

They just don't appeal any more.
They just seem to be badly making jelly mould cars for people with more money than sense with arrogant and disinterested staff who don't help when you need them and barely look at you when you walk in. I know at least 4 people who recently have been in the market for a new vehicle and every single one said "defiantly not LR" because the reliability and costs are so eye watering. They don't make anything which appeals to me or anyone in my age bracket that I know (late 20's mix between hard up and millionaire) so I'm going to wait until Ford releases its F150 EV, then wait a few years until they put it in the Ranger, then a little longer till they get second hand value then I'll get one to replace my current ranger and keep the 110 until the government make it so uneconomical to run it will be pointless to keep. Because they are selling 99% of them as leases on PCP, people don't care about what it is its an image thing. Theres at least 20 brand new Evoques in the village I live in (which isn't big) and countless Disco's RR Sports and Full Fats. I've only seen two Defenders, my one included and the other is a Wolf out of about 500 houses.
Everyone wants the image, they don't care about the product. |

Round here a few years back there was a number of Land Rover products owned by neighbours.
On one apart from the missus keep hold of hers and updates it every three years, all the others I am guessing got changed for other makes. For many people Land Rover is just a car and at the end of the day, some people like a change, for some it’s about running costs. Modern vehicles have a lot of technology but no sole and defiantly not a vehicle to hang on to once outside of warranties and in JLR’s case the public are swayed by the bad press. Even ‘specialist’ in the second hand car market don’t want modern JLR products on the forecourt in they can help it... The new management need to put a halt to new technology and vanity ideas such as driverless cars and get the people at the top away from their desks and coffee machines and put them into a dealers for a month and work on the issues at ground level. The old saying of a house built on dodgy foundations won’t stand for long. JLR and it’s dealers a few years ago never had to bother selling cars because the paying public just bought them. Now they need a proactive and supportive team. I’ve said before on another post about the number of vehicles my wife has had from her first Freelander 1 three door to her current Velar, have Land Rover ever called her to ask how she is, would she like to pop in for a coffee, would she like to test drive a different vehicle, would she like to swap cars earlier. No, not at all. There is no after sales experience outside of servicing. For any other ‘owner’, where is the incentive to go back to JLR for a new vehicle. Would most people opt for a nice coffee or a seven year warrantee. If I had a grand to buy shares, JLR would not be getting my money..... |

I do agree that Tesla are producing EV vehicles which people want to buy and EV vehicles are the way it is going. This is possibly the bit that JLR haven't got their heads round yet. I feel the same as you markb110. Apart from one phone call a year asking me to service my truck (most of the time, I had it booked in with them before the phone call), there has been absolutely no relationship at all with the dealer in the last two or three years. When I went in, there was only one of the aftersales staff who seemed to take an interest in my Defender. The others, I almost felt it was too much bother for them to serve me. The only constant were irate customers moaning and groaning about their vehicles, or lack of progress in repairing them. I know I have banged on about not being offered a look at the new Defender, well I did get an email about two weeks ago asking me if I wanted to book an appointment to see the new 90 I didn't bother them |

The next he’s sending up space rockets into Space. Remarkable really. I think JLR’s biggest problems are prices, deserting GB and the designs they’ve now created just aren’t that popular. In my view they produce cars that are not very interesting, are all too similar in style, too expensive and are marketed at people very dissimilar to myself.
I'll add the caveat that I have no interest in, or need to, buy any new vehicles, but if i did, it wouldn't be a JLR product. They also seem to choose very unsuitable people as their spokespersons which puts people off, also the story always seems to change. It wasn't long ago someone from JLR said the new Defender would be a proper utility with a pickup version...they also don't seem to acknowledge the predominantly negative reaction from the customers. Well Slidey, I have not been in Schooling for over 30 years. My Dad had a go at my English Teacher with regards to my poor spelling (well in his opinion, he was a Newspaper Compositor). Mr Humphries my English Teacher told my Dad that I was one of his better spellers. Dad told him it was nothing to be proud of
Do you wonder why I struggled at School? Of course he was right. My English is abysmal. But when I was at School all they worried about was creative writing. These days they just teach kids to pass the exam with the highest possible score. Too bad if you don’t understand. It keeps the School exam tables looking good though. |

I think there is a number of issues;
Product range has too much cross over in terms of features and price- there is no clear distinction between the ranges any more. Over priced for what they are- the constant edging upmarket is leaving them with no entry level car as such Not good enough quality- you only need to look at the customer feedback, they stilll seem to be struggling with inconsistent reliability. No longer the best in the market in each sector- with the exception probably of Full Fat Range Rover...... the JLR product range is outclassed in pretty well every model by other products- New Defender is no exception.
