Radiator grill to bonnet gap?
HI Folks, a quick question. I removed the radiator front grill to fit a stainless aircon grill. All went quite nicely. It was later when I refit the radiator cover, but when I stood back to admire my work I noticed that this gap was excessive...maybe 20mm. I can see the bonnet catch etc. quite easily. I removed for screws along the top and two larger ones at the sides. Did I loose some spacers along the way does anyone know. It's dark now and I can't see anything though I have spent a half hour crawling around on the ground and can't find anything. It is possible it was always like this and I am only just noticing, but I don't think so! I have called it a night but it is bothering me something shocking! Anyone know if there should be some spacers there?

It will have always been like that. There are no spacers or other parts and the grill surround will really only fit in one way. Darren

Well at least I haven't lost anything! I will see what adjustment I can get on it in the morning.

Not sure if I’m understanding you here but are you aware the bonnet closed position can be altered by adjustment of items 12 and 8 in the diagram below...

Well, you folks were correct. In daylight I aligned the top to the old track marks and everything is back exactly the same. The lower left bracket isn't folded as crisply as the right hand side and holds the grill out by a quarter inch. I will get the Dremel and enlarge the relief in the grill at a later date which seems handier than trying to remove the bracket whick looks best left alone at this point! I will adjust the bonnet later as the adjusters are both loose and it's a little higher on one side than the other..... I never noticed how badly everything was aligned, I think your best not to look to closely! Truck is off for blasting underneath and epoxy coating who which will then be covered in a raptor bed liner style paint. Met another man who had this done two years ago and it still looks good. Be a change from the waxing.

I came across this issue when doing some work on mine at the start of this year. Never noticed it before until I saw another Defender with a much tighter gap between bonnet and grill, and thought it looked better.

I tried lowering the bonnet stops, but there wasn´t much to be gained, and then thought of raising the grill. The lower mounts at the side will allow for vertical movement, so no need to modify them. I simply fitted circular plastic spacers under where the top screws mount and lifted the grill about 6mm. It closed the gap up enough so as to look right.

Neccessary or functional? Not at all.
But rather like correcting the drooping front wings that most late Defenders come standard from the factory, it feels nice to improve the face of the vehicle, and it doesn´t costs anything other than a little time and patience.

As already mentioned, some come from the factory looking fine! 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

You need to adjust the bonnet pin as well as the two stops to lower the bonnet at the front but there is a limit where it will get very difficult to shut. Ray

Exactly. Leave enough space at the sides overlapping the wings, so they don`t colide when dropping the (heavy and undamped) bonnet to close it.
On mine, the chequer plate compounds the problem. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

That's a fine looking 90 Wild Card. I was thinking the same thing. Drill and cut some nylon or acetal bar stock and make some spacers. Aye, the bonnet gaps are uneven and need a wee tidy. As the sun is going down I might put this off until tomorrow.
