what dictates Brake caliper body renewal? + other question
Hello

I have noticed that the lining on the front brake pads is reaching 4 / 5 mm - time to replace pads I think.

The pistons do not look rusty but there is some surface rust on them so I am interested in ordering a stainless steel rebuild kit because I am afraid that when I push the pistons back they might damage the seals.

The body of the calipers is quite rusty (lightly flakey) What determines whether I should buy new ones? (apart from rust in the seal area? (I know that splitting them is not advised) I have been reading quite a lot about the topic even here.

Can I sandblast them with the pistons still in without causing damage? I will try do everything myself

Any trusted supplier or brand of S/S piston kits and seals?

i have used Zeus stainless pistons to good affect.

check price of new calipers as they may be cheaper than pistons + your time.

order extra seal kits as outer dust seal is easy to damage. soak them in brake fluid prior to fitting.

i just wire brush caliper, if its old 1980s1990s it may need replacing but if its 20years old or so i would of thought it would be fine ***subject to what its been submerged in**** unlikley it needs replacing.

4-5mm is quite a bit left, just over half way through? Cheers

Sorry not sure if they were uploaded in the initial post.

Here are the pictures. They should be 2003 Defender (AP) calipers. I do not go wading or do mud runs just regular road usage and occasional farm work in fields during hay season. No road salt either but salty atmosphere since the island is just 13miles x 7miles

They look fine to me, I have seen many that are far, far worse than that on the outside.

Im about to change my discs and pads and ended up buying a disc/pad/calliper set from Maltings for 200; at that price it seemed daft not to do it.
