Tapping at idle when warm
Hi all,

I recently did the injector loom and cleaned out the plugs in the ECU in my 2003 TD5.

When its warm theres a distinct louder tap coming from the engine (at least I think there is). I've tried my best to catch it on video.

Hello,

Mine does the same, it sounds particularly bad when lugging at low revs too.

When its at its worst mine sounds like marbles rolling about in the top end- has been to a couple of specialists who are unable to sort it. Its a bloody 'orrible noise though.

Hi Chris, I've done a bit of digging and as you said it seems to be a TD5 thing some do which still doesn't always fill me with hope.

As far as I can tell its not doing anything bad, I suspect it could be injector clearances, however I think it could still be the oil in the ECU issue 'clearing out' there was a lot of oil in there.

I gave the plugs and ECU plug a good clean when I changed the loom but I think repeated cleans might be needed, I've ordered a lot of contact cleaner to be sure...

Its into the local specialists for the A Frame replacement next week so may get them to plug it in when its there, my scan gauge isn't a patch on a nanocom.

I have been pulling my hair out over it for about 3 years- it was initially suspected as being injectors performing poorly so had a set of new injectors and there was a marginal improvement.

It drives me absolutely mad- when its really hot, it sometimes actually manifests as a bit of an intermittent miss as it returns to idle.

regards

Chris

If there’s a sound like marbles rolling around have a listen for a chirp sound when switching the engine off. This could be the harmonic damper pulley, there’s a good write up on (I think it was a long time ago I read it) discovery2.co.uk or something like that.

Edit: here’s a link http://www.discovery2.co.uk/CrankPulley.html Ray

Try putting some Stanadyne through it. Could be a bit of diesel knock. Charlie

Just another idea, and this I cured last weekend

On the sound deadening cover , drivers side, one of the grommets with the bolt through it had partly perished and push through on the bolt shank.

This in turn was causing the sound deadening cover to flap and make a knocking / ticking noise.

I replaced it with a big grommet I had and a large washer for a cheap fix.

Worth checking and ticking off the list at the very least.....

Also try removing the bonnet altogether and see if the noise disappears, as if the hinge bushes wear the hinge can tap on the bulkhead. Ray

I will have a look, the bonnet does move a touch here and there, will also pull the belt off and have a look at the pulley.

I've ordered some up, doesn't hurt to try.
