Puma tdci fuel economy improvements
Just thought I would share with you all the journey towards better fuel economy on my 2013 Defender 110 puma Muddy Funster. When I purchased her the economy was atrocious at around 16 Mpg,the first item on the agenda was a remap.
After looking around a great deal and seeing that the vast array of different companies professing to have the best map for Puma I decided to use Celtic tuning. This was based on the fact that I figured the engine is just a transit engine and nothing particularly unusual. Celtic did the job for £250 which was a very good price, thay also have a great deal of experience with transits as well which was a bonus. I then removed the huge full length roof rack (flat dog) which weighed around 30 to 40 kgs. With these two jobs done this has brought the Mpg up to 25 to 26 Mpg. This weekend I have fitted a BAS Hi flow intercooler, I will post again when I have the results from the next couple of tank fulls of fuel.

16MPG? There's something seriously wrong there, you should be getting about twice that.

Mine's a 2.4 but over the last 3 fill ups it's averaged 31MPG. It's happier when running on premium and in the summer, but 31 on cheap diesel in winter is about right for me.

fab.rob, that's thinking outside the box, I'd never had thought about a transit remap specialist, I'll watch your post with interest and see how you get on with it

you might be right about it being a transit engine but the rest of the drive train isn't which might explain why the LR map isn't the same as the transit map.

I'm not suggesting it won't work but you have to ask why it was changed in the first instance?

That just doesnt seem wise to me. While the engine may well be the same there are a huge amount of things that are not the same.

Pumas should get roughly 25 - 30mpg on average.

Fitting a larger IC wont change the MPG much either, not enough to save you £500 in fuel anyway. Instagram @defender_ventures

again I'm not suggesting it's going to make a world of difference but I understand torq is limited by varying amounts in the lower gears with full torq only available in 4,5 and 6th.

I also believe there's gear harmonisation which relates smoothing out gear changes which works with the clutch switch. will this be the same for a front wheel drive and 4 wheel drive?

again I'm not suggesting these are game changers but it does point towards a transit map not being ideal for a defender?

I say it was a transit map, it was a map that was developed by them for Defender but thay had a great deal of experience with transits. And as I say the price was right in as much as it was not the huge sums the likes of alive were charging (just because they have done a large number of new defenders off of the production line})

I really don't think a map removing a roof rack would see that much significant gains...

before mapping id of checked everything over and made sure the car was 100% before mapping.

Don't know what to tell you guys but the s the figures. I did also add about 5 psi to tyres all round so now sitting at around 38psi

I know this is an old thread but I am having significant improvement of fuel consumption recently. Usually my 110SW was always at about 25-26 mpg. The last few full tanks have brought me at 30-31 mpg. I can't tell the exact reason because I did change few things since lockdown.
1. Air filter mod - great thing, I drive more in low rpms as it just has the power.
2. Switched the gas station from Shell to independent with LiquiMolly additive. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR
