I noticed with our Win 10 after some updates a while back, that when it starts up, although it shows my user account name, it defaults to asking for a PIN number, not my password. There is an option below the box where it is expecting a PIN input, to select a different log on method.
When I click on this, it then brings up a box to enter my password. It may be a different problem with your mother's machine, but it might be worth checking that she isn't trying to enter her password into the box that is expecting a PIN. |

There have, I understand, been numerous problems with recent W10 updates since omnipotent MS have made BIOS changes to effect a change to GPT partition management. I have heard of several people whose computers have been rendered terminally unusable after uninvited updates.

Microsoft are not known for their update reliability, Tim. Sorry to hear of your problems.
I think you maybe able to restore the laptop back to pre-update setup, but I can understand that may be difficult. Go buy her an iPad Tim I think the latest update is also trying to push the user towards Edge as a web browser. lohr500, I actually prefer the PIN number instead of a password, but I fail to see why a 4 number / 6 number pin of numbers is any more secure than a password. Whilst talking of passwords, I'm sure someone tech on here will know, why do IT bods always want passwords changed every month? The number of people I have worked with who have to have a post it note stuck adjacent to the PC to remind them of their current password! I would think it would be more secure to have one password the you could keep and remember? |

I’v tried the iPad route........... she kept complaining that the battery wasn’t holding the charge then I found out a) she had set it so the screen stayed awake all the time b) she wasn’t actually plugging it in to charge it and c) she didn’t know / couldn’t remember how to switch it off (after me spending a whole day with her showing these things!). She prefers her HP laptop!
I’ll take a run to visit her tomorrow and take one if my iPads to try the suggestions above and report back - I suspect that she hasn’t noticed the option to log in by another method - I frequently get phone calls asking if she should do something that has created a yelllow message box at the bottom of the screen! I have to say she has far few glitches with the H`p than either she or my Dad had with their last laptops, they were right pains ‘special” deal Machines from PC Workd....... This my pet hate with windows 10! They seemed to think that they know best of peoples systems! One of the 1st things i did with windows XP, windows 7 and windows 8 was turn off that automatic updates. My lecture said its your friend that, i found it gave more trouble, when it was enabled. Yeah service packs are great if you need them. I only update systems when Internet explorers need it. My installation i have on this system really needs to be redone again. its that badly full of crap. But i am looking at building a new system, at some point this year. I think one of the updates, it gave you the control back for disabling the updates feature. As soon as that came on the cards, i disabled it. I am looking to test some software called black ICE which freezes the install. So it cannot be updated unless i remove it etc. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

I feel your pain, Tim.
It is what I like about iOS - and why others will hate it. You get what you get. It does the job and within reason, there aren’t many ways to mess around with it. PCs are great for people who like to have fifteen ways of doing a task and a hundred ways of customising the task. I lost much of much of my interest in PCs when XP was sent to the recycle bin. Never got on with Win7 or 8. 10 just seems over cluttered and complicated. My Mother in law has both iPhone and iPad but dislikes FaceTime. Didn’t see the value in seeing and talking to her grand kids during lock down. If our landline rings, best chance is it’s the wife’s Mum. Can’t get over to her that FaceTime is free at the point of use. I think she feels daft talking to the iPad. I admit, I don’t use Siri or Alexa or whoever. Whilst I have a finger, I will type. I feel daft talking to my phone and asking it a question so I can’t knock her for it. |

Thanks for the useful info, yes Edge has been installed and the desktop got changed so the 3 apps my mother has on her screen had disappeared. Resolved the log on and of course new MS OS wouldn’t let her log into Outlook anymore but got that fixed with a new password. Why do the MS developers have to change so much, don’t they realise that they have users who get terribly confused when they log in and find their computer has changed all sorts if things so they don’t recognise their own system............ Apple seems to have got that sorted out but being in their 90’s and with the cost of Apple kit my folks are loathe to learn a complete new system.......... even if it is sooooooo much more simple to use. Windows XP was the really strong, they said it was perfected with service pack 3. I skipped service pack 3 and went to windows 7. That never gave me any trouble, but the hardware it was on just say ran it though. Windows 8 again no trouble but internet explorer on it had a major memory leak. Even though windows 10 has not gave me much trouble but its far to full of bloatware. I would really like to give it a good thin out. My pet hit with windows 10, i shut down the system once, and the next thing it had changed, and the system was hit and miss, i had to sort of reset the system again. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

To provide an alternative point of view, I've been running windows 10 since the day it came out and haven't had any major issues across 2 laptops and a desktop.
The problem with windows is typically crap hardware. You can't get a £300 macbook, so there are never any issues associated with a £300 laptop. |
