I think it’s a fair comment about system components. Apple stuff is expensive and well built. Some of the bargain basement PCs are, well, built to a budget.
I had a bad experience with a top end HP Laptop. Agreeably nothing to do with the OS. Me and my wife bought almost identical laptops (£1200) and both screens failed at around 18 months old. I emailed HP for a quote to repair, and maybe a bit of goodwill, fat chance!! and the repair was nigh on the price of replacement. I asked why similar machines had both failed and got told it was the large widescreen which was being twisted whilst opening the lap top. Not really what you expect. Saying that I had a couple of HP PCs for work (not in the slightest high end) and they were fine. I still think a lot of issues with PCs and OS’s are third party programs. Most business machines stick mostly to MS office and maybe a couple of third party offerings and they run fine for years. |

I spent a good chunk of Friday setting up a Win10 machine, which is the fourth one that I've done in the last couple of years - all variations of Surface Pro's. This time, like the others, was quite painless. The only real challenge was moving large quantities of files over and remembering how to set up Outlook each time
![]() I've generally found Windows 10 to be very stable. Some parts I find slightly less intuitive than earlier versions such as XP - it's almost as if some settings are deliberately hidden to stop you fiddling with them unless you know what you're doing. On the whole though, it's very good. We've had two Surface Pro 4's fail with screen issues. One was just inside warranty and was replaced without issue and the other quite a way outside, to which MS contributed to the cost. One has been replaced with a Surface Book, which is a lovely machine akin to a Macbook, and the other with a Surface Pro 5. They are both very quick. My wife has a Surface Pro supplied from work and the screen failed on that just before lockdown. She runs it through a monitor as her IT department don't seem to want to do anything about it
![]() I agree about Windows 10 seems to have things hidden. Still running Windows 7 for work. I believe most cash machines still run on XP ![]() |

I have problems with windows 10 updates and find the easiest way to deal with it is to uninstall updates then install one by one to find out which one is causing the problem then email Microsoft and advise them of the problem . Sometimes they don't even know of the problem , they have always seemed to put it right within days.
With the problem with the log on screen does allow you to switch from PIN to password you just have to make sure you are trying to log onto the correct account. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to ![]() Richard |

Yeah system hardware and 3 party programs, are the worst for it all. Hardware just barely able to run the latest windows etc, and 3 party crap clogs the systems registry. With windows 10 been very power hungry memory wise, i decided to built a system so it could run it perfectly. That was building a system with 16 gig of ram and a semi high end processor ( built the system nearly 4 years ago) The only thing i did not do was reinstall windows, as i just used the old systems installation.
