Defender lifting to one side when setting off?
Hi guys, strange one here. For the last year my 300tdi when setting off seems to raise up on the front passengers side. I put it down to a sticky piston as sometimes when left for a week or so I'll raise the clutch and nothing would happen for a split second then everything would seem free. I.e. piston seized keeping pads on the disc but then the car would creep forward and everything fine.

I replaced all the brake calipers/discs/pads/bearings/front brake hoses and bled the system 3 times thinking that the issue was in this area (the rear brakes I had my doubts as they were 20 years old and very corroded)

Been driving for around a week and all good so far until today I noticed when I stopped at traffic lights and put my foot on the brake when I was about to go I raised clutch and the symptom was back again! It's almost like one side of the car is raising slightly when I set off. I replaced all shock absorbers and springs so I can rule that out!

The torque that the engine can deliver have to be transmitted to the engine mounts. Viewing from rear end, engine is turning anticlockwise. So the engine block wants to turn clockwise when loaded. So more load on right hand mounting. Since the weight of the engine does not change, then there is less weight on the left engine mount. This can create the effect that you see.

To see if it is a brake sticking problem, check the temperature of the discs after a run. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I’ve seen this on a classic 2 door Rangerover the rear drivers side spring becomes weaker from the engine torque Whistle

Perhaps the effect is more visible if the dampers (shock absorbers) are worn. My old 90 used to bounce a lot for the first few meters after it is left unused for a while, but then it settles down once the dampers are re charged. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

original tdi springs, ( and pre tdi) were longer on the divers side than the passenger side, thats why front l+r , and rear l+r all have different part numbers, difference is about 8-10mm each side iirc. partly due to the torque and partly due to most LR's not having a passenger, a lot of the time.

My '86 N/A 110 ex mil, used to do all the time, with a slight 'bonk'. then i fitted +1" HD up front , same length, and it stopped.
My 300 tdi 110, never did it with worn out std springs, and doesn't do it now with +1" hd up front. 'Volvo XC 70, taking the rough with the smooth’
