The torque that the engine can deliver have to be transmitted to the engine mounts. Viewing from rear end, engine is turning anticlockwise. So the engine block wants to turn clockwise when loaded. So more load on right hand mounting. Since the weight of the engine does not change, then there is less weight on the left engine mount. This can create the effect that you see.

I’ve seen this on a classic 2 door Rangerover the rear drivers side spring becomes weaker from the engine torque

Perhaps the effect is more visible if the dampers (shock absorbers) are worn. My old 90 used to bounce a lot for the first few meters after it is left unused for a while, but then it settles down once the dampers are re charged. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

original tdi springs, ( and pre tdi) were longer on the divers side than the passenger side, thats why front l+r , and rear l+r all have different part numbers, difference is about 8-10mm each side iirc. partly due to the torque and partly due to most LR's not having a passenger, a lot of the time.
My '86 N/A 110 ex mil, used to do all the time, with a slight 'bonk'. then i fitted +1" HD up front , same length, and it stopped. My 300 tdi 110, never did it with worn out std springs, and doesn't do it now with +1" hd up front. 'Volvo XC 70, taking the rough with the smooth’ |
