Australia 2015 Defender 130 Puma 2.2 HCPU Alpine White
I have a 2014 2.2 Defender that is mapped and can get scary EGT's very quickly especially in 6th going up a long climb if I let it sit at 2000 rpm will start to overheat back off or drop into 5th and temps fall.
I have also had the EGR cooler fail in both of my defenders one had symptoms very similar to yours.
I found that these can burn coolant but you will not smell or see any sign from the exhaust due to the cat catching it.
Leave the Nanocom hooked up and go for a drive and watch coolant temp real time t is an eye opener.

So...Did 140 miles without a stop.

Topped up 1 inch of coolant to the line before I left.

Within the first 40 min the temp gauge rising happened 3 times. First time went all the way to red. Other times I caught it so didn’t lose power.

I ran the nanocom live (which was an eye opener on coolant temp!)

On the motorway the temp sat mostly around 96c but ran between 89-104c with speed between 60-70mph.

It seemed to only happen on slower roads before we hit motorway and during normal driving conditions.

When I got back I popped the bonnet and the coolant tank was hissing and there was sign of coolant around the top but don’t know how much leaked yet.

Attached a pic of the highest temp when I lost power.

I can’t really predict when it will happen which makes it hard to work out!

Will replace the cap and test to start with.

I also found that when the engine gets that hot to blow coolant out of the cap you have to let it cool and bleed the system as it seems to get an air lock in it.

That might be a good idea.

I’ll see if my limited mechanical knowledge will be able to cope with a job like that Laughing
