Been selling like hot cakes:

"More than 400 Land Rover Discoverys have been sold to support police forces across Europe in the last 12 months.

Some of the vehicles ordered by Germany, Czech Republic, Poland and Bulgaria will be used as part of the European Union’s Frontex Border and Coast Guard Agency. These vehicles are tasked with allowing authorities to control the borders of 26 countries in the European Schengen region."

The German ones are quite snazzy:

Bingo

I think you are looking in the wrong direction - comparison year on year is obviously difficult but what is a reasonable comparison is how the various Land Rover models sold against themselves in the same period:

To sell less than half the volume of the critically panned D5 must be disappointing for JLR and, again, runs in completely the wrong direction of travel to all noises they have been making about it being a near runaway success...

For comparison in the first quarter of sales the Evoque sold over 27,000, Discovery Sport over 13,500 and the Velar over 8,800.

But some of the reason for that will be because no one was able to see a Defender in the flesh, no one was able to test drive one and there is a big waiting time to get one. Plus loads of potential Defender buyers (unlike us geeks) have no idea yet that there is such a think out there to buy until they start seeing them on the road and then deciding ‘wow I want one of those’.’ All those reasons combined will have contributed to slow and low sales figures at this early stage Sold the Puma Defender and bought a brand new Pangea Green 2020 Defender D240 S with a few factory extras!

Have JLR been making up salary to the 100% level. Just reading that "FCA and GM salaried employees are getting their full paychecks".

These figures are for the 1st real quarter of deliveries. Initial sales into these markets weren't all speculative orders off dealers lots, some must have been made up of orders taken since orders were open. It's this pick up that's being commented on against the hype coming out of JLR, and for comparison other new models 1st quarter sales, under the same conditions you have mentioned, are referenced. New Defender has not compared well.

Is that really true? JLR's social media team would certainly disagree with you & for once I think they have it right. They certainly haven't skimped on the money spent ~ Namibia, Red Cross, etc. Most of my relatives have mentioned it to me, without me bringing it up first.

All those reasons combined...

Visibility of the product is the only reason I can see in your argument ~ and it's a good reason, but it's almost a Catch 22 for JLR, certainly a bit of a circular argument, if to sell bigger numbers, first they have to sell more to get visibility up.

There's something quite perverse about it, isn't there?

It was always great to call in the big Italian and Spanish ports and Defender spot a few years ago as not only did the mooring teams use Defenders tricked up to handle very heavy mooring lines, the Customs and Coastguards in both countries used them. I knew some of the mooring team foremen well and asked where the Defenders went to. Mostly they were TD5’s and early Pumas but the salty sea air claimed too many chassis. But there was a good side, many of the mooring teams were able to buy the vehicles cheaply and rebuild them. One downside from the Nissan Navarra pick-ups that seemed to replace the Defenders was in the Spanish ports the mooring teams had lost several Nissans to the dock bottom, pulled off the berth by the ships moving unexpectedly while mooring lines were still being dragged along the quay by the pick-up. In 20 years with Defenders they never lost one to the seabed! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

It’s a bloody disgrace!!! All our services should be forced to but British where ever possible. All government Staff and Royals Should have to too. I saw Prince William driving an Audi SUV the other day in the papers and Prince Harry in a Audi Estate! It’s an outrage. They should be ashamed of themselves Sold the Puma Defender and bought a brand new Pangea Green 2020 Defender D240 S with a few factory extras!

New defender and D5 count as British? New Defender is only the 2nd foreign assembled car I’ve bought in 30 years, the other one was my Mini Countryman PHEV, assembled in the Netherlands and now for 2021MY comes with the same stylised Union Flag tail light lenses as the U.K. assembled Mini’s Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
