At least partly, if you believe the story that heavily restricted international travel has lead to people purchasing cars more suitable for domestic adventures. That would only be a contributing factor though. I suspect Jaguar has some underlying decline in there related to the brand itself. It could also be that their two volumes sellers (the SUVs) were at the end of their life and due for a facelife. |

So Toyota had a bumper 2020 in Oz then ~ quite literally giving money back...
"Toyota Australia has confirmed that it will return JobKeeper payments received in 2020 following a strong sales performance in late-2020." "Toyota was the best-selling brand for the 18th consecutive year, with total deliveries of 204,801 vehicles – just 975 short of the previous year. In fact, Toyota’s sales in late-2020 were so strong that Toyota Australia recorded a fourth-quarter total of 66,179 vehicles, a gain of 29.1 per cent over the same period in 2019." Yes, I think Andrew PW has commented on the domestic market there, and how busy certain camp sites have been whilst he's been travelling around.
Your market is dominated by Toyota : Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge But then they do better in JLR's backyard also: Click image to enlarge Model wise, Ford have done well resisting a Pacific rim clean sweep & Europe exported more convicts over 100 years ago than cars today: Click image to enlarge |

Yes i dont think the Defender will bring any new customers to JLR that wouldnt have already been looking , Sad really they have just created a vehicle to take sales from themselves , also not think Australia is an important market is a big failure on JLR part as for Toyota and other SUV mfg Australia is one of the most important markets

i reckon H it will be more about customer retention or claw back in OZ, especially D3/4 owners who could not
make the leap to the D5.. bring them back in the fold possibly.. I think the majority of us that bought or are buying the new Defender are just green oval junkies yet another pommie bar steward down under MY20 110 P400 SE Defender MY10 3.0 RR Sport |

yep take the Land Cruiser 200 series , that has been selling so well and bringing new people to the SUV market , Land Rover you need to be bringing new people to the market and sadly the Defender isnt that. You can buy a 200 Series off the lot easily there is not the complexities of spec like Landrover.

Latest from JLR:
Click image to enlarge I have absolutely no idea what "Order bank" means or where these figures fit in relation to previous statements in June 2020(?) that the order bank was 22,000? |

IIRC the order bank is the orders taken by dealers that have a deposit paid on them and a contract to buy signed, it includes cars that dealers order for stock. Would be interesting to see how those figures dovetail with the year-on-year orderbank for the D5 or the couple of other models floating around the Def pricepoint. Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

I've just spoken to a friend that has a dealership (not JLR) and his understanding of order bank is exactly as interpreted by Tim, so basically customer orders and stock orders.
I personally know three guys that have taken delivery of their new L663, all have been long time customers of JLR, moving from a D5, a RRS and FFRR. Defender 90XS SW Mini Countryman Cooper S Morgan Plus 8 |

That's where Brand loyalty on the one hand is great, but on the other hand can be it's own worst enemy if models so heavy cross-pollinate.
The Évoque sold like hot cakes because it was new, unique in the market and would generally not steal from other LR models, bar a few Freelander owners wanting something a little more chi-chi. Defender doesn't seem to offer anything entirely new, nor does it target non JLR buyers particularly well, mainly through its pricing. It might have dragged over a few Toyota LC or Nissan PF buyers had it been 20% cheaper, but none of the truck/utility buyers. So it's reliant on SUV sales, and brand loyalty means it will be hard to drag a G Class or Q7 owner over from their respective brands to something that for day to day use, is not remarkably different or better. Where it is remarkably better, Off Road, would not be high on the list of priorities for those types of buyer. What is interesting is that I'm seeing so many more comfort spec utility trucks out there (Ford Raptor, VW Amarok, Merc X, Nissan Navara etc) in what seems to be a real trend towards 'Sports - Utilty' (in the real sense of the term) vehicles, that there would have absolutely been a market for a cheaper and more utilitarian buyer without crossing into Disco or RRS territory and poaching their buyers. A completely new buyer, or indeed a previous Defender owner. Missed a trick.... Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Yes that would be an easy understanding, however, I cannot reconcile the graphic with any previous statement, either made directly by JLR, or as reported. As an example:
"JLR has delivered more than 9,800 units of its Defender SUV in Q2 alone and has an order book of over 35,000 units." https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/jl...77315.html "JLR’s order book of just 22,000 vehicles, disclosed in its results last Monday, left analysts underwhelmed." "Despite being configured online 1.6m times by enthusiasts, only 11,000 customer orders have been placed for the car so far, with a further 11,000 test-drive cars ordered by dealers, according to JLR’s annual results." https://www.ft.com/content/c90cc60e-9bd3-4d9c-8a0c-0fcedfe8426c |

Not order bank, but actual D5 sales: Up to Dec 2019 they were averaging 3,745 per month, from January 2020 they have been averaging 1,904. In the quarter the new Defender started sales the average was 1,480 per month. |
