Remap - Dynachip v BAS
Hi All,

Prior to driving to France in the summer I am looking to get my 2010 110 remapped.

Having explored this forum on the subject of remapping I still haven’t quite understood what the difference is between say Dynachip and BAS. Both seem to have lots of satisfied customers and one you can do remotely, whereas the other comes to your house but that aside is there anything ‘technical’ that would give one an advantage over the other?

Thanks in advance

I've got the BAS 170 remap on my 2014 2.2 110 van and my mate has the similar Alive remap on his 2014 2.2 110 Utility.

Mine revs a bit more freely and has more 'go' a bit higher up the range, whereas his is a bit more torquey in the midrange but runs out of puff a bit earlier (just under 3500 compared to around 3800 rpm). Both are very similar at lower revs, and both much nicer to drive than standard at any revs.

Mine was done with Pete's remote tool, my mate took his to Alive (in Lincolnshire) to be done.

To be honest, I would be happy with either of them but prefer the ability to put it back to standard (and back to tuned) in a few minutes that the BAS one offers, even if I'll probably never do it.

I know nothing of Dynachip I'm afraid.

I have an Alive stage 2 remap, Gary from Alive and Pete from BAS totally understand defenders, Pete has done so much work and research into Defender engines he is regarded as a Guru Bow down when it comes to remaps etc.

Either of these two will be able to offer you a more bespoke remap suitable to your driving style and requirements.

I have no knowledge of Dynachips but if it is like superchips a company I used 20 years ago whilst it did offer an improvement in torque and that’s whats important not bhp after all defenders aren’t racing cars it was a “generic” map and not specific like Alive or BAS can offer you.

I went with Alive because stage one had been done by them prior to me buying the Defender and it was logical to have Gary do stage two.

However if I had to pick between the two.....wow that would be a tough call.

Dynachips etc maybe cheaper but don’t let that sway you too much Thumbs Up 2015 HT XS 90

I ought to add that if you go for the BAS one, you can then also have Pete's intercooler & hoses, and upgraded turbo (with additional remap), should you wish....

Remaps are a bit of a minefield. I have no experience of Dynachip so can't comment on them. I do have a BAS170AB remap and can't recommend it highly enough. I would also highly recommend Gareth at Empire Tuning. And have only heard good things about Alive and IRB Developments. Personally, I would only use one of these.

The reason I went for BAS is purely I was highly recommended by a personal friend and secondly if it's good enough for JLR, Bowler and Twisted, it's good enough for me Thumbs Up

Whoever you go with it really is worth doing, done right it will totally transform the whole drive for the better. James

I think they are pretty much chalk and cheese in terms of what you are trying to compare. I had an initial remap from Mike at Dynachip - it gave me what I needed quickly and cheaply which was more torgue in the lower gears so I wasn't trashing the engine just to get up the hill to my house.

Mike gave me what I needed, but in hindsight I don't think there's a lot of thought that has gone in to what the engine is designed to do and sitting within agreed thresholds, he just delivered what I asked for.

I've subsequently been to see Ian @ IRB to get a stage 2 remap and during the process found that my turbo needs replacing (potentially due to the original re-map) although it would be unfair to completely point the finger in that direction but my 90 has only done 15,000 miles, 11 of which were by the previous owner so in my eyes it's hardly run in. Ian did say the re-map was pretty basic to say the least and was outside permitted limits as far as he sees it in lots of areas... I didn't bother getting too technical with him - at the end of the day he's the wizard not me!

To that end I may have gone for a cheap re-map to start with but it could have been the cause for me end up needing a new turbo (again can't prove that but it's highly likely).

So sometimes going for the cheaper option in the short term might not always be the cheapest option in the long term Thumbs Up

Something else to consider, the BAS is done via the remote tool, which also doubles up as a fault code tool as well as other functions - vcv learn, injector programming etc. > 110 XS Double Cab

I have the Alive stage one on my TD5 90. Pulls really well and sounds great. In third and fourth there's shedloads of torque and it is (or rather feels) surprisingly rapid.

OP I think your decision is no longer Dynachip or BAS....... but BAS or Alive and in fairness those of us whom have fitted either of these great remaps will recommend the one we have fitted Thumbs Up 2015 HT XS 90

I have the BAS 170 Biography on the 90.

Now drives so much smoother and less taxing. Even when towing it’s more relaxed with more torque and less gearstick twiddling.

What sold it for me was the Service and Support offered by Pete at BAS. I replaced the stock ECU, in case I ever wanted to go back to stock, without any messing around. Although you can reflash the existing ECU back and forth if you wish.
Pete was available all day Saturday and even the evening to make sure I did it correctly. And I have zero mechanical skill. 😗

I had my mechanic friend change the intercooler and hoses.

The difference is night and day different. Just plain easier and less effort to drive with a welcome increase in ooomph when needed.

Note: I also changed the shifter to one of those slick-shift ones as well. Made gear changes so much smoother.

Thanks for all the brilliant responses - it is great to experience how helpful people on this forum are and it is greatly appreciated.

I have decided to go for the BAS remap. As someone highlighted the difference between Dynachip and BAS appears to be chalk and cheese and if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right. That’s not to knock Dynachip as it clearly provides a cheaper option but is less sophisticated. Alive appears to be an equal to BAS but the remote option swayed me.

Can’t wait to get it installed and to try it out.

Thanks
