EGT temperature gauge
I'm in the process of some 'mild tweaks' to the 300tdi including boost pin & ring, silicone hoses and a replacement intercooler.
As had been said, with these things being able to monitor the EGT, is very important.

The digital readout EGT gauges I think would look out of place in an older defender so have spotted this which seems to tick the right boxes....
https://fourby.co.uk/epages/950004277.sf/s...s/EGTROUND

However, the product description advises.....
" Due to the length of the probe, this is not suitable for a 300Tdi installation if you plan on using our boss at the manifold where the EGR used to be.
However, if you want to mount it somewhere else in the exhaust stream, it would work.
"

has anybody solved this issue, and if so, how??
The thought of drilling / tapping / welding the exhaust manifold fills me with horror (even if I could.....which I can't Embarassed )

My thoughts were adding additional EGR blaking plates to 'shim' the probe into a higher position.....or is that too 'bodgey'????? 2000 D2 TD5 - ahhh bless

It's hard to tell in a way, because they don't have a picture of the probe itself on the link.

I've just recently installed an EGT probe, as part of a 'Madman' EMS kit. I've got this pic of their website:

It is quite long - and definitely far too long to fit straight down.

However, on their instructions it does say that the probe will need to be bent to fit into the exhaust stream, and not foul the sides of the manfold. I was quite lucky in that I had an alternative turbo to hand. I was able to fit the probe to the EGR plate and bend it, then offer it up to the new turbo and see how it fitted, I found I had to bend it a little more than I expected. This is a little nerve-wracking, but it's working fine. Quite scary in fact to see how the temps vary so much, so quickly and so easily! A definite case of 'new data anxiety' Shocked

Maybe the probe fourby are supplying can't be bent, or they don't want to advise that for DIY installers?

On the other hand, maybe it's the same probe, and could be quite easily bent up into the manifold?

So, sorry that I don't have a definite answer for you, but maybe some food for thought. Donald

We used to do the same as Don with the 300 tdi, bending the probe gently until it fitted. Drilling a slightly larger hole in a block of wood and bending in the hole is probably the safest method of bending.

On a 200, location is a little easier but you have to drill your own hole !

The Fourby digital gauge works quite well on a TD5 dash in a Carling switch holder.

Thanks for the replies.

I questioned the same thing to Fourby and Steph has (just) responded saying the probes are actually TOO SHORT to fit Shocked

I never considered they would be too short.

Can't think what the solution would be now Confused 2000 D2 TD5 - ahhh bless

Here’s the response from Fourby to my enquiry
“ Hi David,

Thanks for the email and apologies for the delayed response.

The supplied probe with these Round EGT gauges is actually too short, rather than too long.

It can be made to work but it’s not suitable with our standard boss. If you wanted to use it, you would have to make up your own plate, drill the plate at an angle and insert the probe in the top portion of the plate, to ensure that the tip of the probe reaches the exhaust gases it needs to reach.” 2000 D2 TD5 - ahhh bless

That wasn't what I was expecting either. The EGR plate is a good place for a probe though - and as you say avoids the risks and stress of trying to drill and tap elsewhere.

The Madman probe is available at 4x4overlander for £45. I wonder if that would be compatible with the fourby gauge?

If neither 4x4overlander or Fourby can answer that, then perhaps Brian at Madman (in Zambia) might be able to help.

Or just find anither EGT option? I know what you mean about the digital stuff in an older car. I've found that the Madman EMS is a good compromise because it fits in the standard console (more or less) and isn't too garish. But again, it's a more pricey thing. Donald

Why would they sell you a probe that is too short to use ?

Like Donald I’ve just fitted a madman EMS3 and their EGT probe to the EGR blanking plate. Relatively straightforward but as said before you do need to bend it a bit. I put the probe in the plate and then put the plate in a vice and bent it using a ring spanner. I used a piece of wire and cardboard to measure the correct angle before hand.

As said a little nerve wracking but actually ok to do, just take your time.

looks better than a purely digital version...…..but then they spoil it with the stoopid external temperature readout.

However, on the same ebay page, this little fella popped up.
