Coolant cap leak
Question is...why?

Faulty cap?
Dodgy pressure?
Something else?

I’ve bought a new cap but I’m away.

Put PTFE tape around the thread but hasn’t made a difference.

Any ideas?

Thanks...Think I might get that!

Would a leak make my temperature gauge intermittently go up? It now seems to occasionally do this but then goes back to normal. Also accompanied by momentary loss of power!?

Hmm, that may warrant a bit of further investigation beyond just fitting a new cap. How much water have you lost? If it's enough to cause high engine temps then there could be a more significant underlying problem. It's unlikely to be intermittent, though. Are you topping it up between incidents or is it just an intermittent problem? If the latter then it may be an issue with the water temp sensor rather than something more drastic.

The loss of power sounds like a symptom of the indicated high temperature. I believe that the engine goes into a restricted performance mode if high temps are detected as a sort of self-preservation measure. Darren

the gauge going to the top could be electrical fault and that gives loss of power as a response to that.

However if your loosing coolant through the cap, sounds like over pressure of system. How long does it take from cold start to start leaking? There is obviosuly a pressure release in the camp.

Do the coolant hoses go hard?

Can you see bubbling in the expansion tank?

If you put heater on hot does it blow hot the whole time or vary red hot to cooler then repeat? Cheers

The coolant system vents via the cap and will run all over the bottle.
I suggest you have another issue.
Are you loosing coolant?
The temperature gauge will not move between 85 deg to 110 deg C
It will only move at 115 deg then it will go straight to red.
The engine will de-rate at 115 deg hence your loss of power.

Thanks for the input.

It’s a 2009 with 86k miles. Been solid last few years I’ve had her. I do 3-5k miles pa. it’s remapped with silicon hoses and bigger inter cooler.

There’s no other issue. On a 140 mile journey the other day it happened twice.

Usually happens 20 mins after start up then random.

Everything feels normal except for this.

This happened once before and I took it in to be looked at. Had EGR properly blocked off, like for like new remap and other valves changed. It seemed to fix the issue but it’s suddenly come back.

Just to add, I’m not losing loads of coolant. I topped up before I left to make sure it was to the line and I haven’t had to top it up. I’ll check again tomorrow before I leave just to make sure.

those coolant caps should be considered a service item.

I replace mine every year, it's dirt cheap. Thumbs Up --

I’ll do that as the first option and see if it makes a difference.

I also have a nanocom which didn’t show any issues.

I haven’t felt the hoses and I haven’t noticed any bubbling but I have heard hissing coming from the cap after a journey.

I haven’t tried the heater. When I’ve noticed the gauge going up I’ve come off the accelerator which made it start to come down but last couple of times it didn’t make a difference and went up to max.

Change cap see what you get but I think its more than that

, check the hoses for pressure and what heater does wrt to temp changes.

9ne of my 2.4s did a head and gasket and temp gauge never moved off normal! Cheers
