Carling Hazard Switch
I am fitting a raptor dash and intend moving the hazard switch from by my knee to the dash and using a Carling Contura Hazard switch. I have used the mudstuff wiring diagram and have come to connect the wires to the original loom behind the original switch. However, i have a red and black wire coming from the switch, which on the Land Rover wiring diagram goes to the hazard warning light then to earth. Do I just connect this red and black wire to the black wire on the Carling switch? All the other wire colours correspond correctly 1998 300tdi 110CSW

The black/red wire is for the original hazard switch's internal tell-tale light.

The Carling hazard switch doesn't need this connection.

From your signature, I see that you have a 300Tdi Defender, this doesn't have a hazard tell-tale light in the instrument pack.

However, if you have an early TD5 Defender (1999 - 2001), the black/red wire in addition to looping back into the hazard switch, also goes up to the instrument pack for the hazard tell-tale in the LED warning lights.

The Carling hazard switch has no output for this external tell-tale.

The way around this is to connect the left and right indicators with a standard 4-pin relay, like this -

From memory when I did my 1999 td with a Carling switch, I tapped into the original wires for the hazard switch and now the lights on the dash flash as before. 1999 Defender TD5 110

On TD5 instrument warning lights, the left and right direction arrows, are connected to the left and right indicator circuits.

The hazard triangle symbol is connected to the black/red wire from the hazard switch.

If you change the hazard switch on a 1999 TD5, or 2002 TD5 to a Carling hazard switch, there's no output from the Carling switch, to drive the triangle warning light.

One way to enable the Carling switch to drive the hazard symbol, is to use a relay, wired as above.

PaulMc - on my 300Tdi Defender the hazard switch illuminates the trailer light when activated. It's always been that way so I assumed it was standard. Ed

Mine is a 300TDi and I’ve just checked, there is no light on the hazard switch and the trailer warning light flashes when the hazards are on.

So I’ll wire the Carling switch into the loom and just ignore the black and red wire that comes off the original switch 1998 300tdi 110CSW
